I knew!

I could hear the news but did not take it in

I knew what they were saying but did not care

I could hear their voices speaking but did not worry

As I knew you were there for me

Then I lost my hair but I did not care

They prodded and poked but I did not worry

They said be strong I knew I would

As I knew you were there for me

We all met in the room with knowing smiles

We shared our stories, crying and laughing

We were all so frail and shocking

We were all united in our fight

I hear the howls of men in pain

I hear the sobs of women lying next to me

I hear the old praying to die next to me

But I knew I would survive.

They kept me in isolating

It was my only option

They said be strong

I knew I would

We heard the footsteps of nurses as they ran

We heard the whispers as the nurses tried in vain

We heard the machines as the doctors tried in vain

We heard the silence of death

I heard the nurses whisper

I heard my father take my mother out of the room

I could hear the doctors debating but I did not worry

As I knew you were there for me

I wonder five years on what was it all about

Each day goes by and I think of them

I wonder why some survive and others don’t

I know why I did because of you!
