A short story by Lana Sillitoe.

Once upon a time...
On an Island far off the coast of the Southern tip Africa lived a beautiful girl Her beauty was of that of a goddess, From her curly black hair to her hazel coloured eyes and bright smile. Her name was Chikondi, which means Love not surprising because she radiated love and joy everywhere she went. Not only was she beautiful but  Chikondi was a multitalented girl .She could Draw ,Dance,Sing ,paint ,Sew and many more .Well of all her gifts there was one thing she didn’t know how to do .She couldn’t cook she couldn’t even summon up basic skill to fry an egg worse off make tea .
You See on this Island, a woman not knowing how to cook, was a great shame and was thought of to be a horrible omen. A woman who couldn’t cook was forbidden to wed  and was banished to one of the desolate islands that where around.” Did this happen often you may ask, because surely Chikondi couldn’t be the first?” No, it didn’t because literally all the women in over three centuries knew how to cook. And these women didn’t “just know how to cook” these women could all prepare food meant for royalty, their food not only tasted good  it made everyone who caught its aroma mouth water and those who were fortunate enough to taste their culinary works of art shed tears .
It was Tradition that on the Island the young girls were to start learning how to cook at the age of 10. unfortunately, our girl Chikondi couldn’t get anything right, it was as though her hands didn’t agree with the whole concept of cooking. She couldn’t even do something as easy as chopping a tomato without making a colossal mistake  that’s how bad she was ...
It was also tradition that when a girl turns 14 the girl may be chosen by 3 different families??? for arranged marriage to their sons. The girl is allowed to know all three males from these different families. Then on her 17th birthday a huge ceremony is held where she gets to pick the manShe and her family desires.
Thereafter on the chosen man’s 25th birthday at that time the girl will be at the age of 19.A huge marriage ceremony is held. Before oaths are taken and the exchanging of vows the girl presents a hot dish to her soon to be husband and father in law. The men are then required to eat the food, if it works it’s magic and both the men cry then marriage commences, the woman is then showered with copper and diamonds from the leaders of the Island, showered with kitchen utensils from the old women and clothes and jewellery from guests. It was in this island where a woman becomes rich on her wedding day. But sadly, If the men do not cry the second, they taste the food, the whole marriage ceremony is cancelled and the girl is shamed and banished from the Island never to return, like in the ancient Story of Felicia the Failure (But we’re not allowed to speak of her) .
Fortunately, banishment was rare as all women on the Island knew how to cook. Unfortunately, Chikondi’s family feared that their daughter would be the first in centuries (Since you know who) to being banished from the Island.
Chikondi’s beauty was no secret. She was so beautiful that the 3 most high thought of families chose her for arrangement with their sons. The first family was the Kings family. They had put Chikondi in arrangement with their heir to the throne.
The second family was the Headman’s family and then the third was the Diamond supervisor’s family
So, at this point you can only imagine the kind of pressure Chikondi’s family was in. Chikondi herself didn’t care but she didn’t want to bring shame upon her family. So, in preparation, every night she and her mum practiced cooking but still she couldn’t get anything right. Its like she was cursed.
On her 17th Birthday Chikondi and her family chose well am sure you guessed right. The headmans family.

Okay jokes aside she chose the kings family. That obviously didn’t come as a surprise because well it’s Royalty and everyone wanted to be in a royal family ??but genuinely speaking, Chikondi and the prince Kondwani had a special connection. He loved her so much and she loved him as well .Their love was so real she even broke the law and told Prince Kondwani of her curse on not knowing how to cook ..He understood and promised that he would fake cry so the marriage would commence Unfortunately he couldn’t fake cry on his father, the Kings  behalf.
They really feared as the months went by  Time had flown so fast and the princes 25th birthday would be in one week. Chikondi ‘s family as well as the prince worried for Chikondi the prince even emphasized that Chikondi and him should leave the village. Fortunately for him, she wasn’t going to allow the heir to the throne to leave his kingdom just because of her.

“I promise you, my food will make your father cry “was all Chikondi said as she laughed out loud.
Her family thought she’s crazy. Her husband to be knew she was up to something because well, in all the years he had known her she would always have a plan to get out of any puzzling situation because she was smart and quick witted.
“I know the king will cry because of the horrible taste” Her younger brother teased at a family gathering once and her whole family laughed. Their laughter came from so much worry. They knew they just had to see what Chikondi will do because they were out of cooking tutorials and trainings that they could use to help her.

The marriage ceremony day had come  There were loud beating drums and  music  playing .The crowd was dancingand it was a huge ceremony because well, royalty was getting married to a common village girl  it made the whole village happy and curious as to what would happen to the lovers. Chikondi’s head was covered in her high indigo turbine and she wore a fitting long indigo dress to go with it she looked stunning . Stood at a distance as she held the tray with the steaming food. The food she had cooked of course tasted horrible and she even laughed at the taste  but the aroma was rich (Just a side bar, after failing over and over in the kitchen she started to experiment with the various roots and herbs and she found that by mixing in a couple different herbs the food developed a mouth watering aroma, it didn’t make the food taste any better but hey the smell was to die for.)
The headman had then called upon Chikondi to present the dish. She was smiling and the crowd was amazed. Her family walked behind her with a couple of side dishes but they were nervous and anxious the crowd could see that the family looked as though it was them who were facing the pressure getting married to royalty.
As she took small steps closer to the throne the beating drums got louder  and with every step she took closer the prince’s heart beat faster because he feared for the love of his life, He knew he was going to pretend to cry but when he looked over at his father’s face he saw his pride and seriousness  and it only made the prince worry even more.
When she finally got to the throne/ alter the beating drums and music stopped and the entire hall fell silent. She bowed down and the entire crowd stared as she opened the tray, she then beautifully laid the food, the worry now was the taste. The Prince was the first one to have a taste and of course he pretended to cry when he did, the crowd cheered as Chikondi couldn’t help herself but giggle and smile .
The hall fell silent again for it was time for the king to taste the food and Chikondi’s family and the prince were nervous.  so then The King  not wanting to wait any longer was presented with the ancient golden spoon to try the food and as he was trying to reach the tray with his spoon .Chikondi had discreetly put some special wild onion in her left hand glovethat didn’t smell like onion but immediately when the kings eyes came in contact with the air around  her handsthe king started to cry ..At the shock of the whole crowd and more especially her family and her beloved husband they all started cheering. The music started playing really loud. The headman was shouted out with joy.
“It’s a miracle the king cried before tasting the food! “
The whole crowd was making so much noise that even when the king was trying to get everyone’s attention by saying he didn’t taste the food yet everyone just kept on ululating and celebrating .
“My king you can still taste the food” Chikondi said giggling and Prince Kondwani purposely threw the plate and the food onto the ground  Chikondi then kissed the king on his cheek and promised him that he would get another chance to taste her food.
At that point Prince Kondwani grabbed his princess Chikondi by her right Hand to go to the dance floor. They laughed and danced with all the villagers ...
THE END!!!!
