HOLOCAUST
THE FALL OF HAVEN CITY

They ran. As fast as they could go, they ran. They ran through the streets, which were quite empty, making Haven City look even more frightening with the current events taking place. The group of three sprinted away from most people, that’s because most people were not actually people anymore, they were different, changed; they were infected.

Just two weeks ago, Perseus Pharmaceuticals tested out a new product on a group of sick patients, calling the product The Phoenix. The Phoenix cured nothing, but instead made those who it had been administered to crazed, changing them into evil and vile creatures that needed to feast on human flesh, not to stay alive, but because they wanted to. They were always hungry, and human meat was by far the freshest they could get.

A group of soldiers battled the victims of the Phoenix Virus. Most died, some escaped, but their whereabouts became unknown to Haven City after the power went down. They are here, the infected. Their number grows by the minute. The usual population of 234,000 has dramatically decreased. And in our time of need, the city’s trusted mayor, Reginald Copperfield, is nowhere to be seen.

The infected were closing in. This is why, they ran.

Nineteen year old Kyle Dutch led the small group of survivors through the city streets of Haven. Every so often, they had to stop to catch their breath, but immediately had to run again as a group of infected people drew closer. Kyle was fresh out of high school, tall with fair-blond hair, blue eyes and a round jaw. His sister, Missy, was eighteen and currently in her last year at high school. She was short with long black hair and dark green eyes. Her features often caught the attention of the last member of the survivor party, Travis Jenkins, a twenty year old rookie police officer desk jockey. Taller than Kyle, Travis had very short brown hair with matching eyes.

“Where do we go? They’re everywhere!” exclaimed Missy, tears running down her cheeks.
“How far…is the police station?” panted Kyle, out of breath after having run all the way from their high school, which lay 13 miles in the other direction.
“Just a few blocks, it should be secure,” Travis answered.
Kyle nodded. “That’s where we’re going then. Hopefully there will be someone there.”

The three started running through the streets once again. They spotted a man running away from a large group of infected people. Kyle and Travis ran to help, but the man tripped and was devoured before the pair could reach him. Finally, they arrived at the police station, which still looked intact and secure. The trio ran in and locked all the doors behind them.

“Hello?” asked Travis nervously, waiting for a reply.
“Jenkins?” asked a voice through a closed door.
The door opened and out came two police officers, Sergeant William Raze and Constable Laura Charm. Travis breathed a sigh of relief as he saw them come out, unharmed and smiling at the sight of more survivors.
“I suggest you guys go to the arms room and get something to shoot, we’ve already lost Michaels and Morris, and Jeff is injured pretty badly,” explained Sergeant Raze.
Kyle, Travis and Missy went to the arms room, led by Charm. Travis handed Kyle and Missy a pistol each, grabbing himself a pump-action shotgun and returning to the room that the officers were holding out in.

Travis looked over Commissioner Jeff Davis, and saw two large, bleeding wounds in his neck and shoulder.
“What happened?” asked Travis curiously.
“He got bitten by those infected guys when he was saving Charm from getting trampled from them,” explained Raze.
“H-hospital…” muttered the weary Jeff.
“We’ve got no way of getting you there, I’m sorry,” replied Charm.

“You guys getting anything on radio?” asked Travis curiously.
“We were waiting for the emergency broadcast system to kick in but it hasn’t,” replied Charm.
The trio nodded and went out into the main station where the radio was. Travis clicked it on and waited for something, but all he got was the looped message saying ‘Please standby for an emergency broadcast’.

The hours passed as they group waited for something to happen. The doors and windows had all been barricaded and the lights all turned off. What made matters worse was it started to storm, hard. It would be difficult to tell if anyone was outside over the heavy rain and constant thunder claps. After four hours of waiting, the radio clicked in once again.
“This is the emergency broadcast channel, please standby for an emergency broadcast.”
“People of Haven, you do not need to be told what is happening on our very own streets, but myself and my party have discovered hope, in the oddest form of all. The infected and crazed persons can be stopped with massive blows to the head and brain. A bullet in their head will do the trick. If you possess no guns, blunt objects connecting with their heads will slow them down and eventually kill them! I haven’t much time, they’ve found out where we are broadcasting from – They’re breaking through, Greg! – They’re in! Oh my god! Remember this, a bullet to the head stops them, if anyone has been bitten by one, isolate them immediately, they will soon be converted to the infected – Greg move! – Oh my g- AH! No! Fuck! AHHHHHH……….”

The radio reporter, Greg, went silent and all that could be heard were small bursts of static and muffled moans and groans from radio. Then an unmistakable sound could be heard. It was like squishing and chomping. It was the sound of eating. A lightning flash illuminated the police station for a split second and then returned to darkness.
“These guys are everywhere,” muttered Charm.
“What did he say about people who have been bitten?” asked Raze for a moment.

Another lightning flash illuminated the room, this time Missy screaming out in horror as the figure of Jeff who was standing right behind Raze. His skin was pale like snow and his eyes had turned to nothing but white. In a split second, he leaning down and opened his mouth, biting into the fleshy shoulder of Sergeant Raze. Raze screamed loudly as Jeff started biting from the shoulder and up around his neck, blood spurting out all over the place, drenching Charm in it.
“Go!” Charm screamed, leading Travis and Missy out the police station.
Kyle stayed, slightly dazed by what was happened.
Jeff threw the bleeding Sergeant to the ground and focused on Kyle. Jeff slowly moved towards Kyle who held his pistol out and without thinking fired. Jeff’s head jerked backwards and he fell down on the ground. Dead.
Kyle rushed over to Raze who was bleeding a lot from the neck and shoulder. He would bleed out and die in a few minutes, thought Kyle.
“Do it,” muttered Raze with pleading eyes.

Kyle nodded and held the pistol to Raze’s head.
“I’m sorry,” he said, and then he pulled the trigger.
Kyle ran out of the police station where Missy, Travis and Charm were waiting for him, and he quickly explained that both Jeff and Raze were dead. The group of now four ran off through the streets once again, hoping to reach the edge of town to escape.

The group of four managed to find a corner store where they held up for awhile with young store owner, Warrick Jensen. Kyle made sure that Warrick hadn’t been bitten or harmed in any way before they sat down. Warrick looked about 24 years old with rough black hair and green eyes. He held an old shotgun on his lap as he sat on top of the counter.
“So how are we getting out of here?” asked Warrick. “You guys have a plan?”
“Get out of the city is our plan at the moment,” sighed Kyle.

Four hours the group held up in Warrick’s store. It had been fairly silent outside, besides the occasional screaming person running past quickly, followed by the sounds of gunfire and then silence.
“It’s time to go,” said Kyle, looking out onto the street and seeing that the coast was clear.
Warrick came to his side and looked out onto the street, as did Charm, Missy and Travis. All of a sudden, a helicopter buzzed overhead, followed by a second, a third and then a fourth.
“Look! Rescue choppers!” exclaimed Travis.
“Where are they heading?” asked Charm curiously. “They’re not stopping where the people are.”
“They’re going to Oliver Tower! That’s where Mayor Copperfield will be. We need to get there,” said Kyle.
“Excuse me, but have you looked outside? The fucking streets are covered with those flesh-eating pricks!” exclaimed Warrick.

Kyle turned and looked at Warrick; his face was red and he had large bags under his eyes from fatigue. He also looked very scared and was even shaking slightly in his shoes. Kyle slowly approached him and pulled him away from the others.
“We’re all scared, okay? But if we hold up here much longer, they’ll find us and kill us all. I don’t particularly want to get eaten today; it was never on my ‘Things to do before I die’ list. So in order to avoid that, we need to move and get rescued, okay?” asked Kyle, talking calmly to the panicked Warrick.
Warrick nodded slowly and caught his breath. It was obvious that he’d just had a panic attack, which didn’t surprise him or Kyle.
“O-Okay, we’ll go. I’ll go…” muttered Warrick.
“Okay, good. I need you to hold it together. If you start freaking out it’s going to freak the others out, too. C’mon, let’s go,” Kyle said, moving towards the door of the shop.

Peering out the door, Kyle could see several infected people staggering here and there but there weren’t a whole lot of them. If they moved quickly enough, they wouldn’t even come close to any. He checked his gun and saw he had just 6 shots in it. Everyone else wasn’t that good either, everyone with fewer than ten shots left, apart from Warrick who had twenty plus shotgun shells.
“Get ready to run,” said Kyle as he cracked open the door.

Kyle ran outside, followed closely by Travis, Charm, Missy and Warrick. Oliver Tower was twelve city blocks from where the group was. Ahead of them in the streets they saw other uninfected people running towards the tower where the rescue helicopters were. Unfortunately, they had been followed by large numbers of infected, leading more and more infected to the main street, the same street that Kyle and the group were on.

The group of five had to stop when they were seven blocks away from the Tower, as the road in front of them had become completely blocked with infected. Slowly, the group of fifty or so infected hobbled towards the group, closing in on them, blocking them off from Oliver Tower.
“What do we do?” asked Missy, her voice shaky.
Charm raised her pistol and fired three rounds into the closet infected, dropping it like a sack of potatoes. “I don’t think I have enough in here for all of them!”

Kyle and Warrick raised their guns and took aim, but before either of them could fire, the front line of infected literally exploded in a shower of red. The infected shook violently as they were riddled with bullets. From the building next to Kyle and the group, out burst four men, soldiers by the look of it, each holding a weapon; from M16’s to M4’s to MP7’s to P90’s. They pumped the infected completely full of lead until there wasn’t one left alive. The lead man turned to the group of five and approached them.

“Are you alright?” he asked politely.
The group was stunned. Travis finally spoke, “Who the hell are you?”
“I’m Captain Lucas Talon of ARTS; Armed Response Tactical Squad. This is my team,” said the man, nodding at the other three men. “That’s TK Locke, Valios Harper and Carlos McGrady; we’ve all encountered these motherfuckers before.”
“So what are you doing here?” asked Missy.
“We’re looking for someone; Reginald Copperfield,” said TK as he stepped forward.

“Copperfield? He’s the Mayor of this town, what do you want him for?” asked Travis curiously.
“We want him to kill him,” McGrady said furiously.
McGrady looked like a person who didn’t have time for bullshit. His eyes were almost red with hatred and anger.
“Actually, we want to get information from him…and then kill him,” corrected Valios with a joking smile.
“Wait; hold up, why do you want to kill him? What’s he done?” asked Charm.

Talon laughed and looked around suggestively, the others following his gaze.
“This was all him. About two weeks ago, some assholes called Perseus Pharmaceuticals tried out this new medicine called Phoenix, which was supposed to be the cure to practically everything; It wasn’t. What you see in front of you is the result of being infected with PV,” explained Talon, pointing to the group of dead infected on the ground.
“Excuse me, PV?” asked Kyle with a confused look.
“Phoenix Virus, that’s what it’s called now. Anyway, someone used the PV as a ‘get rich quick’ scheme. They sold it to people, Copperfield being one of the buyers. So once the PV arrives and is released, these infected people are created, and when they bite someone else, they pass it on, and the best part is, the only cure we have so far is a bullet to the head,” Talon explained further.

The whole group was shocked. They couldn’t believe that someone had actually willingly and knowingly created all this carnage around Haven City.
“But, why would someone do this?” asked Warrick curiously.
“These people, I believe that they are truly psychotic. They just want to watch the world burn; or at least remove everyone in it. And they always are very distant, classic sociopaths,” said Valios.
“And that’s story time over, boys and girls. C’mon, Lucas, we’ve got a job to do,” said an eager McGrady.

“Yeah, you’re right. Well, see you guys later, good luck with surviving and everything,” said Talon as he turned to leave.
“Hey, wait! You guys are going to Oliver Tower, right? So are we, we’re coming with you, we’re low on ways to defend ourselves,” said Kyle as he ran off after them.
“Fine, just don’t expect us to wait for you if you fall behind,” said Talon.

The newly formed group of nine, now consisting of Kyle, Missy, Travis, Warrick, Charm, Talon, TK, Valios and McGrady, ran towards Oliver Tower quickly. When they got within one block of the tall tower, they were shocked by what they found. The entire bottom of the building was completely swarming with infected people, all standing on the outside, trying to get through the locked doors and windows of the tower. It looked as though it was a homeless mob, and at the tower someone was giving away free turkeys or something, there were so many!

“You have a plan for getting inside?” asked Kyle to Talon, whose mouth was hanging open.
“I’m working on it,” muttered Talon quietly. “TK?”
“Yes, I have a plan. You’re not going to like it though,” replied TK.
“I’d love to here it, so try me,” Talon replied.
TK sighed and took a deep breath. “We move in a line, grenade them as we go. Guys at the front grenade a path through, guys at the back grenade the rear aft and the middle guys defend the front and back guys, sound good?”
“No,” said Talon.
“I told you that you wouldn’t like it,” said TK.
“It doesn’t mean we won’t do it. Valios hand out the grenades,” said Talon.

Valios started unclipping grenades from his belt and sorting them out.
“Wait, you want to fill us in on what we’re doing?” asked Charm.
“If I must; we form a line, the front three people will be throwing grenades in front to clear a path which we will then run down. The three at the back will be throwing grenades at the ones we missed so we don’t get overrun. The three in the middle will be shooting the ones that get too close to the ones at the front and the back, understand?” explained Talon.
Charm nodded slowly, not at all liking the idea of what they were about to do.

“Young police lady, TK and I will be at the front. Valios, young police guy and what’s-his-name will be at the back. McGrady, shotgun guy and what’s-his-name’s sister will be in the middle, got it?” asked Talon.
The group nodded and got into formation; Talon, TK and Charm at the front, McGrady, Warrick and Missy in the middle and Valios, Travis and Kyle at the end.

“Three, two, one, let’s go!” yelled Talon as he threw his first grenade into the infected crowd.
TK and Charm did the same as they followed Talon as he ran forward. The infected were blown apart by the first few grenades, creating a small path about five feet wide that they could run down. Twenty meters from the buildings entrance and Valios, Travis and Kyle had to start throwing grenades as infected starting closing in again. McGrady, Warrick and Missy were firing madly at any infected that was closing in.

Talon reached the front glass doors, infected closing in, and as luck would have it; the doors were locked!
“Aww…when the fuck will anything actually go right!” screamed Talon in frustration as he smashed the glass of the doors and climbed through, followed closely by TK and Charm. Warrick and McGrady continued firing as they reached the door, Missy climbing straight through.

Valios, Travis and Kyle had fallen a little behind the group and were slowly getting overrun by infected. Suddenly, Travis fell to the ground. He turned around and saw what was left of an infected person; they’d lost there legs and stomach from a grenade blast, but was still very much alive. The infected person was holding onto Travis’ leg and dragging him back – it was so strong!
“Help me!” screamed Travis as he was dragged further back.
Valios turned and let off a shot without looking, the bullet hitting the infected in the exact center of its head. But it was too late to do anything more for Travis, as several more infected had reached him…and were well into eating him. Valios grabbed his last grenade and threw it onto the pile of infected that were gathering around Travis and ushered Kyle forwards to the door.

Warrick and McGrady jumped through the door just before Valios and Kyle did. The grenade went off, killing Travis and several infected. Talon and TK dragged a large desk and threw it against the hole in which Talon had made to get inside.
Missy and Charm started crying when they noticed that Travis had not made it inside. McGrady returned from the elevators.
“They’re down, we’ve got to take the stairs,” he said glumly.

As the group turned to head towards the stairs, Kyle saw something outside that caught his eye. It wasn’t the infected, it was about a block behind the infected, but they were heading towards the building. It was a small group of people, about a dozen, two dozen even. They were running really fast towards Oliver Tower. Kyle noticed more and more emerging from behind the first group, and pretty soon there was about seventy running people. But it wasn’t their running that caught his attention. It was the speed of their running – it was extremely fast.

As the runners arrived at what was left of the infected outside the building, Kyle gasped as he saw them close up. They were definitely infected, but there was something different about them. They weren’t at all slow like all the others, they were extremely fast, and they had facial expressions. The one that Kyle was looking at was actually smiling…at him.
“Oh god…” muttered Kyle as he realised what was about to happen.
The runner broke into a sprint towards the glass doors. Kyle turned and ran for the stairs, where the others had just arrived.
“Fucking move it!” screamed Kyle as he ran.
The runner leapt up into the air and glided towards the door a full seven feet. The runner smashed through the glass doors, sending shattered glass everywhere, landing on its feet and looking up at the group. It was missing most of the top of its head, but its eyes were still nothing but white. It smiled at the group as more runners approached the building.

“What the fuck?” muttered Talon as he blew the first runner apart with merciless machine gun fire.
It took almost a whole clip until the runner was dead. Then he turned and ran up the stairs, shutting the fire door behind him. The group ran up the stairs as quick as they could. By the time they reached floor two of eighty, the fire door burst open and in came a whole group of runners. Talon, who was at the rear of the group looked down and saw the runners climbing the stairs quickly, others were literally climbing up the hand-rails, ascending the floors without even touching the stairs – and they were moving a lot quicker.

Talon broke into a sprint as he went up the stairs and followed the group.
“Don’t look down!” he screamed to them as they reached the fifth floor.
Instinctively, the whole group looked down to see what Talon was talking about. They saw the runners and then ran even faster up the stairs. Every so often, Talon would turn and fire several shots off at a runner that had caught up. TK and McGrady looked down the stairwell and fired, knocking three of the climbing runners off, sending them hurtling down to the bottom floor.
“This isn’t good!” screamed McGrady.
“You think?” replied TK as he let off a burst of fire from his MP7.

Twenty minutes into the climb, they reached the fifty seventh floor - and the entire group was exhausted. The runners had fallen behind and were nowhere to be seen, so the group went up the last remaining floors a little slower, at an easier pace. By the time they reached the top floor, they had all caught their breath. The group exited the stairwell and entered into one large office. A desk sat near a row of full-length windows overlooking Haven City. Kyle hadn’t known it, but there were many sections of the city that were burning.

In a chair overlooking the city sat Reginald Copperfield, the Mayor of Haven City. Fifty years old, Copperfield looked sixty. His job had aged him horribly, and he already required the use of a walking stick due to many injuries to his hips and knees. As he heard people enter his office he spun his chair around and saw the group.
“Are you here to kill me?” asked Copperfield softly as he spotted Talon.
“Yes,” replied Talon, cocking his pistol.
“I don’t think I’m ready to die,” said Copperfield, getting out of his seat.
Talon tensed as he did so, clutching his pistol tighter.

“If you must kill me, let me show you something first,” said Copperfield.
He came out from behind his desk holding his walking stick. He hobbled over to a separate doorway which held another flight of stairs which led to the roof. Copperfield went up, followed by Talon, McGrady, TK and Valios, all holding their weapons at the ready. Kyle and Missy followed up, Warrick following close behind. No one even noticed Charm get silently yanked back into the first flight of stairs. Seconds later, a large row of runners crept out of the door and headed for the second door.

On the roof of Oliver Tower, Copperfield stood looking out over the burning city. Talon came and stood beside him, his pistol still pointing at the Mayor.
“What do you see when you look at this city?” asked Copperfield.
“Destruction,” replied Talon.
“I see cleansing. Haven City is, forgive the language, a shithole. Full of low-lifes, thieves, and murderers…it’s a breeding ground for the filth of the world. This, my friend, is returning it to its natural state,” explained Copperfield.

“I don’t. I see one man, compelled by greed to shape this city in your own image. And if I don’t stop you, what’s to stop you taking over the world?” asked Talon.
Copperfield smiled, “Nothing, dear boy. But I think I’ll kill you now.”
It happened so fast that no one even saw it. A runner smashed into Talon, knocking the pistol out of his hands and sending him sliding towards the edge of the building. Talon skidded off the edge but managed to grab a hold of the side of the building, dangling eighty floors off the ground.

More runners burst fourth from the stairwell, Kyle shooting down the first one. A second runner held something in its hands and Kyle’s blood went cold when he saw what it was; Laura Charm’s head. It had been ripped completely off her body and was now the proud trophy of one of the runners. Warrick, Kyle and Missy fired in every direction, each time wounding a runner. TK and McGrady made their way over to Talon. McGrady grabbed his hand and started to pull him up. A runner smashed into his back, sending McGrady over the edge! Talon yelled in pain as McGrady grabbed onto his legs, but McGrady had a runner hanging from his legs too!
“Hold on, Carlos!” screamed Talon as he tried to pull them both up.

Meanwhile, Copperfield had summoned one of the helicopters, which was now landing on the roof. Copperfield approached the helicopter, ready to leave. He turned and came face to face with a large infected; the Alpha runner. Kyle saw this from near the stairwell, but it didn’t attack him. Copperfield actually spoke to the runner, which then nodded and rejoined the fight. Warrick suddenly screamed loudly. Kyle turned to see Warrick getting dragged away by no less than six runners, dragging him back down the stairs, Missy holding onto his arms tightly, but it was no use. Warrick and the runners slipped down the stairs and the feast began.

Kyle remembered a grenade that Valios had given him earlier, before they’d entered the Tower. He quickly pulled the pin and threw it down the stairs. Warrick saw the grenade land next to his face and silently thanked Kyle for a speedy death. The blast went off, shaking the building. Kyle and Missy turned around and saw that only one runner remained; the Alpha runner. Valios lay unconscious on the ground, while TK limped over to where Talon and McGrady hung.

TK reached Talon, McGrady and the runner that hung off McGrady. TK tried to pull them up but they were too heavy.
“McGrady, lose the zombie!” screamed TK.
McGrady shook his legs as hard as he could, and finally, the runner lost its grip and fell the full eighty floors down to its death. TK started pulling Talon and McGrady up a lot easier now.

Kyle and Missy got up and started to move over to help TK when they saw something. Copperfield looked out of the helicopter, which was taking off was ready to take off. But standing next to the helicopter talking to Copperfield was Valios! Apparently he had regained consciousness and was now talking to Copperfield. Kyle and Missy looked disbelievingly as him and didn’t understand what was happening; Valios and Copperfield were in this together!

Valios nodded to Copperfield and turned around, drawing a pistol from his belt. Kyle’s eyes met with Valios’. Quick as a whip, Valios took aim and fired one shot at Missy. Kyle reacted on instinct and dove in front of Missy. The pain was excruciating. It was unlike anything he had ever felt. The hot lead poured through his body like poison. Kyle bled from the chest, lying on the ground, Missy leaning over him, trying to stop the bleeding from the wound.

At the same time, TK was still pulling Talon and McGrady up the side of the building.
“TK look out!” screamed Talon suddenly, but TK didn’t have any time to react.
TK’s head exploded like a watermelon as Valios stood behind him, having fired one shot directly into his head. TK’s body went limp and fell to the side, leaving Valios staring down at Talon and McGrady. Talon was struggling to keep himself up on the building with the added weight of McGrady. Valios just looked into Talon’s eyes and smiled a wicked, ice cold smiled.

Casually, he leaned down and with his pistol, fired one round into one of Talon’s hands, literally blasting several fingers off. Talon howled in pain as Valios smiled again, dropping his pistol which had run out of rounds. Missy looked up from the wounded Kyle and saw Valios get into the helicopter with Copperfield, and then take off and fly into the distance.

Talon, holding on by only one hand was struggling to hold on.
“I can’t hold on, Carlos! Climb over me! I can’t hold us both up!” screamed Talon.
“I‘ll bring you down if I climb up!” yelled back McGrady.
“Do it! We’re not going to make it!” screamed Talon, slipping a little further as he held on with his one good hand.
“Do me a favour, Lucas, will you?” asked McGrady quietly.
“This isn’t the best time!” replied Talon.
“Just promise me you’ll get him, okay? Make sure you hunt the motherfucker down, okay? And tell my parents that…that I fought well, you know? Or something like that,” wept McGrady.

“What are you doing, Carlos?” asked Talon, looking down at McGrady.
McGrady just smiled weakly up at him.
“No! Don’t you dare, Carlos!” screamed Talon, but McGrady let go.
Carlos McGrady fell eighty storeys down, killed on impact as he hit the ground. Talon wept to himself as he hung by himself. Missy suddenly appeared as took Talon’s hand. She weakly dragged Talon up onto the building, barely able to even get Talon up.

Missy sobbed quietly as she looked at Talon.
“Where’s Kyle?” asked Talon softly.
Missy didn’t respond but looked over her shoulder, where Kyle Dutch lay dead, killed by Valios’ gunshot.
“We’re going to get him, okay? You understand? We’re going to hunt him down, I swear, if it’s the last thing I do, I’ll get him,” said Talon, dragging Missy to her feet.
Missy just nodded at Talon as the pair ran as fast as they could towards the stairwell.

The city continued to burn, the infected continued to multiply, the deaths continued to rise.
Haven City had fallen.
