Sandra and I just had our dream wedding. We had a massive turn up with lots of foods and drinks. Our guests were the crème de la  crème of the society. I got a big surprise when we were about to cut our cake, the MC just whispered into my ear, ' His Excellency the governor is around'. Personally, I'd have no business with the governor but trust my dad, he invited all his fellow politicians. Their presence though, added life to the wedding. After such a huge and successful wedding, the next for us was our long awaited honeymoon. We had both agreed to spend the honeymoon at The Mayfair Resort, Spain. Sandra loved the weather there and I, the Wonderful people. We were to spend the night at a hotel in town and then take off the next day. I looked up to this night and waited patiently for it to come. Finally, Sandra and I, we'd get to......... * Inside our Black range rover SUV was Dan, my best man who drove us; Martha the maid of honour and of cause we, the couple at the back seat. We drove pass a police check point and Dan did the usual, He squeezed some naira notes into an officer's hand and that triggered their prayers. 'Your marriage would prosper','. You will deliver twins', and all that. Trust money, It could bring out the spirituality in a man. As soon as we left the checkpoint, I turned to Sandra and looked her in the eyes, our hands locked together. She was breathtakingly beautiful and I knew for once in my life, I had made the best of choices. 'I love you dear ', I said to her. She gave that smile, one that could melt the heart of the hardest of terrorists and then, with the softest of voices, whispered to me, 'I love you too'. By now, our lips were drawing closer, about to seal our words. Eyes closed, we were ready for it when suddenly, we heard a bang sound. 'What was that?' I asked, annoyed. What on earth could bring me back from heaven I was heading? Before I could get a reply, suddenly, we heard sounds of gun shots fill the air. We could literally see bullets flying in the air. ' Oh! Heard this in the news this morning, this street gangs are at war again .' Dan said. By now, the shots intensified. 'Go down, everyone, ' I shouted. I thought that was the best thing to do. Sitting upright would put us in danger of being hit by stray bullets. We remained there and soon, the the shootings ended. I did a survival check. 'Everyone okay?' 'Yes', Dan replied and Martha replied. There was one voice left, Sandra's. I turned and met her still down. I tapped her but there was no response. My heart skipped a beat. It was now, my attention was drawn to her gown and there were blood stains in the stomach area. I looked up and noticed a bullet hole in the Car window. It was hard to believe but I just lost my wife of Seven hours. I did not know how to react. Quickly, my mind raced back some hours. I recalled our wedding, our vows and our promise to stay together forever. There and then, I made up my mind. Sandra couldn't leave me like that. I opened the door and went to the car boot. I searched for a while and then found what I was looking for. The knife we used to cut our cake, right there inside the cake. At this point, Dan was making a phone call, maybe he was calling the police ambulance. But I cared less about them, what mattered most was Sandra and I. I had vowed to stay true to our promise of together for ever. And so,with riverlike tears streaming down my cheeks, I did it. I sunk the knife into my stomach. I laid there wriggling in pain but with happiness in my heart. Alas, I would meet with my Sandra. Wherever it was, here or the land beyond, we would still be TOGETHER FOREVER!!! ©Caleb Thompson (Caleb tommy) 2018. Fiction.
