I Can Remember

I can remember piling out of the van.

Momma hollered “Don’t forget the milk”

With both of my 9 year old arms snug around

The jug, I stepped onto Grandpa’s property.

Mama holding my baby brother.

There Ruby, Grandpa’s sister, stood on the porch.

Exchanging words

Mama  yelled “ We cant find Grandpa”

My mind whispered between my ears,

“Oh he’s just out hunting”

Down a narrow path out by Grandpa’s house I walked

Searching

Hours passed

Our optimistic thoughts weakened

That’s when my step dad ran through the front door

His worried eyes carried his sharp words

Grandpa was dead.
