A guide for watching Orioles baseball in 2019.There is a daily dose of shenanigans coming from Washington D.C. The Baltimore Mayor situation is an embarrassment to all who live in Maryland. Our baseball team is in a rebuilding mode (def,- we suck), So instead of looking at the W-L record or the standings, here is what we should really be cheering for..................................................(remember that the Birds are basically a minor league team playing in the A.L. East)
Pitching - We have none. So if a starter has a quality start, that is a positive. When a reliever comes in and shuts the other team down, a positive. If either pitcher gets in a jam and pitches out of trouble, a positive. W-L records and ERA mean nothing to us this season.
Batting - Look for the hitters to get better as they get more experience. HR's are nice but they need to hit major league pitching. Base hits, good contact, opposite field hits, bunts, sacrifice flies, are all we can expect at this point.
Defense - These guys are major league ballplayers and should be able to catch and throw. The spectacular stops, the diving catches, hitting the cutoff, throw to the right base, are what we should be watching for as the season goes on.
Miscellaneous -
Baserunning - steal a base, take an extra base on a hit, tag up when possible, again all things to build on.
Manager/Coaches - So far so good. As the players develop the manager and coaches must also develop their skills. Know when to send a runner, do a double steal, a hit and run, bunt a runner over, all strategies that good teams use in their quest for a division title. Ours should use this season to take a chance or do the unexpected. Again, the W-L record doesn't mean squat.
Bottom line is to ask yourself if the team knows the basics. Do they react the right way to whatever situation they come up against ? Do the players communicate ? Are they a team ? This is the way to watch these "baby birds". When the Orioles return to being a well rounded major league team, we can say that we remember when these guys were just learning the ropes.
