A large black and white Magpie flies high in the midnight sky, unseen, unheard. It flutters from its high perch zipping across the sky and resting on a rooftop, hidden behind a chimney. It looks out with its beady eyes at the street below.

The street is bathed in the florescent dull orange of the lights dotted at regular intervals, barely enough to fight off the darkness that threatens to envelope everything. It is quiet and serene with the only noise coming from that of the by-pass some where off in the distance, underlining the quiet ambiance of the small English town.

The silence is broken by the joyful laughter of a young woman who walks beside a tall gentleman. They are a young couple coming home from a date, he thought it would be a good idea to take the walk as an exclamation of a successful evening of frivolity.

As they walk past an alley that leads to the back of the shops, another man steps out from shadows, a baseball cap pulled down low covers his face in sinister darkness. He cough and the young couple turn and see him holding a snub nosed revolver pointed at them. The gun looks almost comically small in the figures large meaty hands.

The gentleman instinctively pushes the woman behind him as he steps forward a pace. Desperate, he looks for a way out of the situation. The mugger simply ushers with his hand expectantly, everyone knows what needs to happen but the gentleman is afraid of being shot anyway.

He fumbles desperately at his back pocket, trying to undo the button, the mugger grows impatient.

Things get load and confused fast, something big and heavy drops on top of the mugger and the gun goes off, sounding like a thunder crack in contrast to the quiet of the night.

The mugger lays broken under the weight of a figure dressed in black and white armour, his cape is long and made up of thin interlocking segments that look like wings and a tail.

“Who the hell are you?” The gentleman asks.

“Magpie and I'm here to show you your way of doing things does not work.” The figure replies.

Before the gentleman can react, Magpie raises an arm and fires a grapple, he quickly disappears back into the shadows.

The woman rushes forward and checks the pulse of the mugger.

“He's dead” She says.

“Great” says the gentleman.
