You Have to Read This Book

The Heretic’s Daughter by Kathleen Kent

I will start this essay by openly admitting I am a history geek.  The dates, the places, the events, have always fascinated me and often left me wondering what it would have been like to see the historical events unfold in front of you r eyes.

I am here to say the Heretic’s Daughter by Kathleen Kent answers that question.  From the beginning the letter from Sarah Carrier Chapman to her granddaughter grabbed me and had me wanting to find out the rest of her story.  A note here, the story of the Carrier family is a true one.

From the beginning it was clear the story was about the Salem Witch Trials.  The magic of this novel is though that the historical events take a back stage to the story of the Carrier family itself.  Each family member with their own distinct personality and story to tell are like pieces of a time machine bringing you back to their day to day lives and the extraordinary events that took place while they were living them.

This novel is not a sugarcoated version of that time in history.  Small pox, and its ravages, being warned out of town and eventually the witch trials themselves are described in such vivid details that you feel like you are a witness to the events themselves.  It brings you to the church services where rumors began to fly to the meeting house trials to even the jail cells where people were locked up.  All scenes that will stay in your memory long after the last page is read.

The Heretic’s Daughter is a historical read, that will get you thinking about the life those in that age survived and the dangers of mass hysteria.  It is a book that history buffs and readers who just like a good escape into another time will not be able to put down.
