Dear Jane,
I hope with all of my heart that it is you who is reading this. I have given it to a traveler that says he is on his way to St. Paul. I have sheltered and paid him all of the gold that I have remaining to do so. I realize that this was probably a mistake, but I have to try.
I have found a cabin near a mountain. I cannot be more specific in case this letter is intercepted. I was near death and starving when I found this place. I was on the run much longer than I expected. Please don’t be mad at me for the robbery. I had to help them, they were starving. I just couldn’t take any more suffering.
I must tell you what I have found. In this cabin is an actual book. It is very, very old and bond in animal skin. The ideas in it have set my mind on fire. I have a feeling that there may be a better way of life for the first time. I want so very much for you to know it as I have. I have read it bit by bit all alone in this cabin by the light of my small fire.
Such ideas that I have never heard!
I think that there may be another past than the one we have been taught. I am risking everything so that you might know it as well. I dare not send the actual text as it has barely survived my reading it. I have transcribed it here for you to read. I hope that you enjoy it as I have and that it finds you well.
I love you.
