A monster in my basement

I have a monster in my basement

It waits silently and still

It knows that I know where it is

It waits there until...

The dark days come

They chase away the light

It’s me who lets it in

And I know that it’s not right

It feeds on every bad feeling I’ve had

And every dark deed I’ve done

It can’t come out

When I’m living in the sun

It’s my fears that it knows about

As it creeps up the stairs with evil glee

It prepares to pounce upon my dreams

Coz it is me that has set it free

It plays games with my mind

And fools me with the shadows

It is devoid of any hope

And cannot exist where love goes

But it’s my faith in what’s good and true and right

That keeps me safe and sound

My monster can stay in the basement

I’ll keep my eyes above the ground
