Ashley opened the door and slammed it shut behind her. As she stormed into the living room, James followed her through the door. Hand on his red cheek.
Ashley's face was red with anger, her hands balled into fists. She was pacing the room when James entered, looking confused.
"Ashley, tell me what's wrong. Did I do something wrong?" He asked. He had is arms down by his side and stood in a way that made him look as if he didn't care what happened.
"What's wrong?" Ashley repeated. "You are wrong!" James looked a bit taken back.
"What do you mean I'm wrong?" He asked. He knew the answer. Ashley could hear it in his voice.
"It is Valentines day." She said, counting on her fingers. James looked at her hand in a scared way. "Most of the people in our class are going out today! You haven't got me anything, not even a card! You forgot my birthday, I didn't! You keep asking me out for dates but your friends turn up, you don't treat me differently from the other girls and you don't exactly say 'That is my girlfriend.' And say it as you're proud!" James looked at her with all her reasons she had to slap him on the face.
"What's so bad about all that stuff?" He asked. Ashley's eyes widened. Why was she going out with him?
"That is not how a boyfriend treats his girlfriend!" James bit his lip as she shouted. "I can't be bothered with this! You don't even hold my hand!"
James help out his hand for Ashley to take. She gave him a dirty look and he let it down to his side again. Both his cheeks had become red now.
Ashley sat down and put her head in her hands. Nothing seemed to be going right. She felt the couch go down as James sat next to her. He tried to take her hand but she didn't allow it.
"Look, I'm really sorry. You are my first girlfriend and I really don't have a clue what to do." Ashley looked up from her hands, not believing what he had just said.
"You're my first boyfriend and I know what to do!"
James looked as if he was going to cry, but he held his tears back to look strong, which was not working. Ashley got up again. She didn't want to be near him.
James followed and forced her to take both his hands. He stared into her eyes, which she tried to avoid but failed.
"Look. I'm really sorry. I didn't know how you felt, I didn't know how I felt but you have to understand I want us to be together. Please."
Ashley pulled her hands out of his and still glared at him.
"I don't care. You've lost your chance. You know Ethan MacDonald? He asked me out two days ago and even told me that you didn't care. He said that I was better off without you if I wanted a real relationship. And I couldn't help thinking that he was right."
She walked away from him again and picked up the phone. As she started to dial a number James grabbed the phone. "Who are you calling?"
"Does it matter?"
"Give me the phone."
He took a step back so she couldn't take the phone off him.
"Who are you calling?"
"I'm calling Lisa, so you better get out of here before she comes round!"
He dropped the phone on the couch.
"I thought we were talking."
Ashley folded her arms across her chest and looked out the window. James grabbed her by the arms and turned her towards him.
"We haven't finished yet!"
"Yes we have!" Ashley pushed him away. "I can't be bothered with this! I want something real! Not just hanging out!"
"Yeah but you wouldn't be with me if you didn't like me!" James shouted back.
"That's before I noticed you were a jerk! Ever since Ethan asked me out I've been having second thoughts!"
James looked into her face. She saw the pain she just cause spread like wildfire.
"But.." He didn't know what to say. Neither did Ashley. She had said what she needed to say.
James caught her eye. Before she knew it he had grabbed her hand, pulled her close and pressed his lips to hers. They stayed like that for a few moments before Ashley broke away.
"Please..." James said.
"Go. Please...just go." She wasn't looking at him, and he wasn't sure what her face expression was like. He walked out of the house, wondering what she was going to do.
As he left, tears fell down Ashley's face. She had liked him, alot. But she needed another reason to stay with him and that kiss was it. She didn't know what to do now. Ethan was nice but does she like him more than James?
She looked out the window and saw James walking away, hands in his jeans pockets. She pictured them together. His arms around her. Smiles on both faces as they looked into each others eyes.
She put her hand to her lips, the feel of the kiss still lingering. She had decided.
She ran from the house, smiling. As she turned onto the pavement she saw James still up ahead.
"James!" She cried to him. He turned and saw her running at him, a smile like hers on his face.
As she reached him she jumped into his arms and wrapped hers around his neck, kissing him. They stayed like that for a few seconds then, when James had put her down, looked at each other.
"I'm really sorry..." James started.
"No, I'm sorry." Ashley cut in.
"Because I didn't see that this was real."
