Mermaid Anchor

I don’t know what possessed me to go to the beach that night. Staggering across the sand in a drunken haze, till finally I stumbled and fell to the ground like usual.  Whatever the reason maybe, I am glad it happened, for I got to meet a mermaid.

She appeared out of nowhere, and just started walking toward the ocean. Before she continued on her wet journey, she stopped and looked toward me, and like a siren’s spell I was enchanted by her.  Her white dress blew frantically with the wind; her hair caressed her face, and shined bright in the moonlight, and her eyes which illuminated a bright blue looked deep into my soul and smiled. Without taking her eyes off of me she started to move again, going toward the moon, deeper into the sleeping water.

I didn’t move, or better yet I couldn’t. My voice would not do as I commanded. Her eyes left mine as the water eagerly invited her down into the depths. When I couldn’t see her anymore, I could feel her. I sensed that she kept walking, and I sensed that she was still looking towards me. Slowly I found my voice. “H-hey! HEY!”

My drunken haze was gone, and shakily I stood going toward the ocean. ‘Where did she go?’ Stupid question, I know but I couldn’t help myself to ask it. I dove in, shoes and all. Blindly I searched for a hand, a foot, anything. Nothing is what I found. I went further into the calm ocean. My lungs got in the way and I had to go up for air. Before I reached the top, I felt a hand wrap around my ankle, and drag me down. I looked down, and there she was, my mermaid, smiling at me with her blue eyes.  I allowed her to pull me down, my lungs burned. Air was no longer important, just those beautiful eyes that kept looking at me with happiness. That’s all I needed. That’s all. Then she disappeared, and then there was nothing.
