Innocence, at the age of four,
Tried to wake up her mother once more,
But for all that she did, and hard as she tried,
She did'nt realise her mother had died.
She sat on the bed, and stroked her hair,
But all she got back was a blank, empty stare.
She felt the coldness of her mothers' hand,
Never realising she passed to that Heavenly Land.
Her father woke up and began to cry,
She looked into his eyes and asked him why?,
Why was he crying? And why was Mam still asleep?,
Too young to understand, too young to even weep.
Suddenly, there were lots of people, young and old,
Mammy had died she was later told,
They might as well have been telling a wall,
She was only four after all.
She stood at the graveside in her solemn black dress,
And watched as her mother was laid to rest,
" Why is my mam in a box in the ground? ",
But of course there was no answer to be found.
Innocence at the age of four,
Never to see her mother any more.
