When the Hoarfrost Came

My love returned when the hoar frost came
It was the palest of full moons, yet not quite the same
In the celestial deep blue of the dark winter night
Crystalline fields winked fine diamonds in the light
Lurking in the blue-black shadows of the forest afar
I can hear you my love, yes I know where you are
For your forlorn cries, which echo long in the dark
Etch the song of your yearning in the depths of my heart
And the pain of your spell, for me it’s much worse
For though I be a witch, I cannot change your curse
A changeling you shall be, and that forever more
Still it’s the man within the beast of whom I adore
So hunt my love by the pale of the moon if you must
Still your savage hunger, and your blood-thirsty lust
And when your sins are done and you are well-fed
With open arms I shall welcome you back to my bed
To warm me from the harsh winter’s night cold
Though you be a beast, your heart’s made of gold
It matters not we are cursed; that our love’s not the same,
For I knew you’d return, when the hoar frost came.
