Summary

A Long Way Gone, by Ishmael Beah is a book involving the meaning of humanity. It is a number one bestseller. This story took place in the time of rebels going against the native Africans in Africa. The war took many lives of innocent people; the rebels raided many villages taking away with them supplies, food, villagers, and anything else that they could find that would come in use. Many children became orphans and many families were left to be separated. Children were abused, and they were left alone to protect themselves.

This war also destroyed the trust people had on each other; everybody began not to trust each other and suspect them of being a rebel. No one knew what would come next in their lives; death seemed to follow them, all they would do is run away from death. Ishmael states that he felt as though a part of him was taken by death when he ran away from it. He suffered due to the loss of his family and loved ones.

Young boys and others who were able to fight were captured and taken to help fight against the rebels. Even though they were on the better side the children were drugged so they would be able to kill without regret and not feel the pain of their injuries. The children became addicted to these drugs and were in need of them all throughout their service. They also used to raid rebel camps, and take their food and supplies. The people that were fighting on the positive side were acting like the rebels.

Everybody should read this book; it presents to us the pain and torture innocent people went through the war; by reading this book people can realize the bad side of war. Through war the consequences from it are larger that the reason why the war started. For example, many people can be scared for life due to the events and losses throughout the war.

This book is an easy read and emotional book which does not have complicated words and sentences that are difficult to comprehend. I believe that this book could have used more diction to present more effect to the reader. The author’s voice changed while the author’s character changed throughout the story; for example, the attitude showed by Ishmael at the beginning of the story differs from the attitude that he show towards the nurse at the end of the story. The nurse helps Ishmael recover his well being and change his negative character. This book helps the people realize the meaning of humanity.
