The sudden creak the air vent makes when it is coughing up dust in the middle of the night, turning your dreams into thick choking nightmares. Old houses have ghosts, everyone knows it. That scratching sound, you pull up the covers to shield your eyes because you can’t tell where the rhythmic claws are coming from, it’s just a raccoon outside your window, but everyone knows it’s really coming from the closet because old houses have ghosts and that’s where they hide. Under your bed and everywhere else you can’t see. The door will up just any minute now and who will it be?

Ashley sat on a creaking swing while fall sent its apple crisp breeze to wrap the blue dress about her youthful figure. Here was my ghost all pretty and coy, just like I remember her and remember her and remember her. Never changing and not quite right she sat there unlike she was but how I remember her, and she said to me “Why don’t we go have a look?” So we went and had a look and I never left. Now I am trapped in time and old houses have ghosts.
