Ever considered the alternative? Is this a nation of freedom and choice? The inspiration for this poem came from doing a little research into how our society views the lives of gypsies and travellers. It opened my eyes to the ignorance around us, and I hope it will do the some for others.

Sitting in this box of knowledge

Admiring the alternative;

I hear hooves, bounding the cliffs of distant lands.

I see nature’s beauty, unscathed by human hands.

I feel spiritual bliss, where souls are bared and accepted.

The sound of the ocean seething dismay

Mocking superior ideals.

Freedom oppressed by seeking conformity.

The life we strive for is flawed.

Our being is trivial.

The gaps in our goals are gaping

So foolish are the learned.

In our pompous ignorance

We stare destruction the face.

I'm craving culture, in a society of blinkers.

Shut my eyes;

Imagine communities

Imagine understanding

Imagine survival.
