SOULLESS

“Dark Defender of Children”

By: Antonio J. Malpica

His father abusive enraged and angered, beats his mother to a bloody pulp. Inside this child hiding in the closet, a fire rages utterly destroying him within like ink pouring from a pen his soul is overwhelmed with pitch-black darkness consuming his innocence. The child grabbing a pen and pad begins to draw with passion unbeknown to the wickedness he creates. Lightning strikes, lightning flashes, thunder rumbles, light flickers as he draws every detail to his creation...(Sigh) finished but suddenly everything goes black.

His heart pounds with anger or could it be fear, something lurks, its breadth humming right over his ear. He turns but nothing is there, could it be his fear of the darkness or screams of his parents yelling? Or maybe the sounds of things breaking, but then his father screams, "AHHHHHHHH!" Curiosity fills his heart and he runs... there it stands before his eyes the shadowy figure holding tight, his father is dragged and grabs to the door frame, "HELP ME!" he yells. He looks at his mother battered and beaten, she lies on the floor voiceless and weakened. He walks to his mother and gives her a kiss, "Mommy… everything will be better now." he says. "Help me..." his father pleas. He crawls slowly to his father dragging his knees, looking him in the eyes and says, "I don’t forgive you." He releases his father's fingers one by one and suddenly as the lightning strikes his father is gone!

Things seem better now after a few weeks, but one evening during a small feast the events repeat only this time his mother begs as she is dragged by her feet. He fights and struggles to set her free, but then the Shadowy Figure turns to see, "A just payment for a just deed." Cynically he says. The lights come back on and his mother is nowhere to be found, he searches, and searches, comes across his pad and stares at his drawing and whispers with quiver in his lips … "Soulless" he reads, staring at the Shadowy Figure that he drew back a couple of weeks.
