The smell of death hung in the air. I looked over to Ramon, who was panting heavily.
"Emillia, are you alright?" he shouted, running to me. But he stopped a few feet away.
I turned and looked down the hill again, where Jonathan lay, dead.
"Emillia?" Ramon whispered. It was awfully quiet. Even the birds weren't chirping. I clenched my hands into fists and backed away from Ramon.
"Why?" I whispered. Ramon took a deep breath. "He hurt you." he said, as though that sentence could tell me why he killed my John.
"That doesn't give you the right to kill him." I said, my throat tightening from the effort of trying not to cry. "But I love you, Emillia. He hurt you and I had to help you, one way or another." he said gently.
"But to KILL him!" all the anger burst out of me. Ramon rushed forwards and grabbed me by the shoulders. "Emillia, this is not what I had wanted to do. I had planned to talk to him. I couldn't help it when he said you were a piece of scum. That was why I pushed him off the hill." he said urgently.
"Yes, but don't you know I loved him? He was the one I love all my life. That was the reason I married him." I said, tears escaping my eyelids. Ramon gently wiped them away. "Ah, you bull-headed woman." he said sadly.
"Although you love him, he doesn't feel the same way for you, sweetie. He proved that you were nothing in his heart when he abused you." Ramon whispered, his warm fingers brushing over the bruises on my hand where John had hit me.
"But he is still my husband." I tried to argue, but I was exhausted.
"Indeed, he was. He's gone now, so you have no need to think about him." Ramon said. I clutched his arm. "What about the police? What will happen if someone comes and find the body?" I asked frantically.
"I'll turn myself in." he said calmly. "That's the only thing I can do." he continued. "Ramon-" My sentence broke off when he pressed his index finger onto my lips.
"Hush, nothing is to be argued nor discuss of this matter." he whispered. All the sadness burst out of me and I cried into Ramon's t-shirt, drenching him with salt-water.
Sirens from the police cars could still be heard from outside of my house. Ramon was staying with me to keep me company when the police took him away. Seeing him with handcuffs around his wrists and being dragged away by the police was painful. I saw his face when he was taken away. His face was smiling, yes, but I could see it in his eyes that he was in etenal torment. That was the last that I've ever saw of him, alive.
Ramon got the death sentence. He was hanged and I was just sitting there, crying, feeling hopeless. The hanging was over and I drove myself to the hill where John died.
Again, there was no sound, only the wind racing past my ears. I breathed in the grassy smell and let my tears run freely. I fished out a piece of paper out of my bag and a pen.
To anyone who reads this,
I'd be dead by the time you read this. My body would lie at the bottom of this hill. My name is Emillia Tessie Keller and I'm 26. My body should be very mangled, so I'm writing all of this now so the police will know who I am. Tell the authority that I have no family, so they need not track them down. Thank you, if you do what I tell you. If you're too scared to, I won't mind. Goodbye.
"Goodbye." I whispered to no one in particular. Yes, death was the best option, just run away from everything that I'm hiding from.
I removed my bag and placed the paper under it, the corner of the paper visible from under the bag. I turned and shouted, "I hope I'll be fine!" That message was for the people living by the hill.
I took my last breath and jumped down, feeling like an eagle. I landed flat and felt the worst pain I've felt in my life. Then-
