[Author’s Note:] This poem is based on a true story about a man who committed suicide off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. This is my interpretation of what might have been going on with this guy.

‘Today I am going to the bridge.

If one person smiles at me,

I will not jump.’

That’s what the note said.

I wrote with my hand

And my pen.

And I meant every word of it.

I look around at the hundreds of people

Milling around me,

So absorbed in their own lives

They don’t see the pain etched across my face.

I walk down to the center of the huge bridge

And look around me.

So many people,

So many differences.

Yet they all look the same to me.

The one year olds

And the 101 year olds

They all look the same.

The little boys licking their ice-pops

And old couples holding hands.

They all look the same

And no one smiles.

I don’t receive one smile,

Not a nod of the head,

A smirk,

Or a full-blown grin.

Nothing.

Nothing at all.

So

I

jump.
