“Why don’t you just tell her?” Craig asked, in his blunt fashion.
“Well, it’s not that simple!” How could he not understand?
“Kris, she’s your best friend, for Christ’s sake! You can tell her anything!”
I sighed.
Yeah, right. I thought. I’m positive that Shannon would be just peachy with her best friend and her older brother making out.
Craig smiled at me and enveloped me in a suffocating bear hug. I inhaled, taking in his sweet smell, like a fresh field or something. He kissed my forehead and we stood there for a while, comfortable in each other’s arms. He leaned down and kissed me lightly on the mouth.
“Tell her tomorrow at school, or I’ll just tell tomorrow afternoon.” It wasn’t a threat, merely an offer to let me off the hook.
“No, it’s okay. I will just tell her tomorrow.”
Late that night, I lay awake, thinking about what I was going to say tomorrow.
“Hi, Shannon! How was your day? By the way, your brother and I are kind of dating now. Is that cool?-
Oh, God. Tomorrow was NOT going to be a good day.
I trudged down the hallway, towards my locker, which is right next to Shannon’s.
“Hi, Kris!” Shannon was happy and bubbly, as always.
“Hey, Shannon,” I said, unenthusiastically.
“What’s the matter?”
What was I going to say? Panic took over and a hollow sensation filled my stomach.
“Um-Uh-Er. Well…” My voice trailed off pathetically.
“Kris, come on! Tell me!”
I opened my mouth and said “I-“
The Homeroom bell ran.
“-Have to go!” I finished and raced off down the hallway.
The whole day I couldn’t concentrate on my work. Twice, Mrs. Rather had to say, “Miss Jacob! Can you please join us!?!”
Finally, the closing bell sounded and I raced off to my locker, hoping to be able get my homework and run before I saw Shannon arrived at her locker. I had just slammed the door when I heard Shannon.
“Kris? What is going on?” Her tone made me turn around. Shannon was standing there, arms folded with a hard expression that I had never seen her wear before.
“Um…” And then the words just spilled out very fast. “I kissed Craig and now we’re sort of together.”
Shock first flitted across Shannon’s face, then irritation, then excitement.
“ARE YOU SERIOUS?” she roared. “”WHY THE HELL DIDN’T YOU TELL ME!?!
I blushed hard. “Well, I thought it would be awkward.”
“Psshhh… Don’t be ridiculous. I have been waiting ages for you guys to get together!”
“Seriously?”
“Yeah! Come on!”
Wow, I am an idiot. I did all that worrying for nothing.
Or that’s what I thought. Little did I know that worse things were coming for me.
To be continued in a novel called "Band T-shirts, Boys, and That Little Thing Called Love."
