Sun shone down upon the dense forest, bathing the clearing in a golden light. In the clearing, moss covered the earthy floor and a few saplings reached hopefully toward the sky. A single picnic blanket was spread across the ground, on which two humans lay, by the names of Thomas and Lilah Rinaldi.

“You know, there’s a legend about this clearing,” the man said, propping himself up on his elbow. When his teenage daughter raised her eyebrows, he continued. “I’m being serious. You see that rock there, the one shaped like a heart and sort of glows when the sun hits it?” She nodded, interested. “Well it plays a part…”

“There was once an angel, straight from the faraway world of Carothia. This angel was prophetically cursed and sent to Earth, where she had a mysterious task that even she didn’t know. The Elders of her world were watching over her, to tell her when she could return home.”

“What was her name?” Lilah interrupted.

“Exsecrari,” he whispered with a faraway look in his eyes. “Exsecrari…”

“So?” she prompted after a few moments. “Dad, on with the story!”

“So Exsecrari traveled for months by night. AS she was cursed, she didn’t have the graceful, elegant looks of other angels, but a terrible, dark beauty of her own. Her hair was an ebony black, tangled and dangerous looking. A blood-red dress wrapped her slim body in billowing layers, slits cut in the back for her gigantic, rain-cloud colored wings to peek through. Exsecrari, called Ex, had eyes the color of dusk. That deep, dark blue, that’s almost black, but not quite. She had skin the color of stars.”

Thomas swallowed and continued.

“And the terrifying power she possessed. It was dark magic, a power she couldn’t control and yet she somehow survived the cruelty of this world.”

“She actually lived in this clearing for awhile. Eventually, a young man found her. He was said to about 26, a few months older than Ex. The second he accidentally laid eyes on her, he hated her. She repulsed him, being what she was: terrible, powerful, and dark.”

A pained expression flitted across his face.

“Yet he continued to go to her, being pulled by some invisible force, Eventually, he started bringing food to her, telling her stories of his life and, in turn, she told him of the curse and task. For months they spoke, both feeling relieved to have some one who would listen intently. Then, after months of visiting her, the man realized that he no longer felt revulsion toward Ex, but a strange, pleasant warmth that he couldn’t quite describe or name.”

“Was it love?” Lilah interrupted again.

“Lilah! Will you stop interrupting me?!?” Thomas snapped.

“Sorry,” came the reply, dripping with bad attitude.

“So, one day, after about two months, the man simply leaned in and kissed Ex gently on the mouth and felt a spark of energy. Ex seemed surprised and then laughed.

‘I never expected that,” she had whispered.

‘Neither did I,” the man replied, and kissed her more passionately than before.”

“A year and a half later, Ex and the man were the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl. The man then told Ex he loved her and meant it with all his heart. It was the biggest mistake he ever made in his entire life. Ex suddenly glowed, shining brighter than the sun itself. She rose into the air, wings spread. She was changing rapidly. All remnants of Earth disappeared from her and her black hair smoothed and grew down to her knees. Her wings smoothed, the feathers no longer harsh and coarse.”

“The light then faded, dimming to nothing. She came back to Earth, settling on the moss, skin still strikingly pale, dress still blood-red, wings still dark gray… dark magic still fighting to get out.”

‘I know now what my task is,’ she said. It’s not to love, or to be loved. It’s to protect the one I love and all fo the Earth from the dark magic. I have to bind it.’

‘How will-‘

She cut him off with a kiss and an apology. Again, Ex shone, but this time, with black light. The man couldn’t see anything, darkness pressing against him from all sides, squishing him. A great pressure crushed against him until he thought he might explode. Then, as suddenly as it had come, the sensation disappeared.”

“As his eyes adjusted to the light, the man couldn’t find Ex anywhere. She had vanished. That’s when he saw it: a golden heart, brimming with black light that slowly faded. The man then understood.”

“Ex had sacrificed herself to bind the magic to her heart of gold. Then he understood the apology from before and the man felt his heart break in two. It simply broke in two.”

After a few minutes, Lilah prompted, “Then what happened?”

“That’s the end,” her father said.

“And… w-what was the m-man’s… name?” she asked, even though in her heart she knew.

After a pause, he looked down at Lilah and said with a crooked, heart-broken smile, “Thomas Rinaldi.”
