As my grandfather lies on his deathbed, he tells me of a heinous crime he committed many years ago and got away with. He also tells me that his freedom was the result of a spell he performed and that I should expect a visit from a dark man. "He will come out of the shadows," are his last words…

The clock strikes 2 minutes past 12 and the pocket watch which was loosely gripped in his hands slithered forth and fell hard on the floor, making the only noise in the grave silence. The date in the middle of the night flipped to 13th, Friday the 13th!? It was cold out there, as I could make out from the misty fog floating in the four directions of the room. The clouds were dark and raging as if crying over the departure of my grandfather. I peeped out of the window, the breeze felt cold on my forehead sweeping my hair from left to right, I thought that a storm awaited these dark clouds. Turning towards my grandfather, I slid the bed sheet over his face now that he was not amongst us anymore. As a tear rolled down my cheeks and I cried over his death, I realized that although all alone in the Preston Mansion, I was not the only one who despised. Sharp and shrill moans of a woman came from upstairs!!!!? *my heart skipped a beat*, but I was an adult now!!! I was a man of 18!!! I couldn’t manage to get unnerved!? Could I? Gulping down my fear, with a lantern in my hand, I started for the stairs leading to the attic.

I had been stepping and stepping the stairs but they seemed to be never-ending. For about ten minutes, I tried to reach to end of the 20 steps which seemed to elasticate to some 300!!! I wiped a droplet of sweat tingling my temples… as I blinked another time, I had already reached the top. The windows behind me flew open!!!! The glass shattered! And the wind howling through the hollow frame of the window made a bone-chilling, eerie sound… I realised that my legs were shaking but I continued talking pale steps towards the attic’s end. The moaning of the woman stopped, leaving me perplexed. As I took my 3rd step forward, the lantern went out of its oil and flame, leaving me in a shambolic state amidst a dark avenue. Again, I could hear soft sobs echoing the dim-lit room. The moon threw a pale yellow luster over a spot on the floor. The next moment, the moon was outcasted by the dark clouds again. The sobs grew louder and louder!!!!

An apparition of a woman raised above the floor encountered me, and I fell unconscious….

When I woke up, I found myself resting an elbow and my dizzy head on the bed, where my grandfather sat beside me reading a book. Without a word of speculation, I asked my grandfather what the date was… He reverted Thursday the 12th…

I’m dead now… it’s been over 100 yrs. and lay motionless beneath repenting my poor fate. Thanks for listening to my story…. *sighs*
