Have you ever wondered where the word Christmas came from?

Christmas by Chris Green

You're probably wondering where the word Christmas came from. A hard working kaleidoscope repair man called Chris Thomas thought it would be a great idea to have a public holiday at the end of the year, so in 1868 he wrote to Queen Victoria suggesting this. Queen Victoria liked the idea. Royalty had been going through a sticky patch and she felt it would make her popular again if she granted a holiday to her subjects. After all they were all working a 90 hour week at the time. She decided she would name the holiday after the writer of the letter.

Chris had used one of the first typewriters to compose his letter and these were notoriously unreliable. Wages being particularly poor at the kaleidoscope repair shop, Chris Thomas had only been able to afford a cheap machine and this malfunctioned on the letters h and o. His signature came out as Christmas. It is probably just as well. Imagine having to say Merry Chris Thomas every year.

Outstanding! I wondered where the name came from. That's as good an explanation as any of them.

I've noticed they do try to keep it hidden Tom. I heard the most unlikely story the other day. Someone tried to tell me Christmas was named after some dude that was born in Bethlehem in the year dot. And he didn't even have a proper Dad. Whatever next!
