Toby always knew Megan was the one for him.

I Always Knew

Toby nervously circled the white clothed table for two. He swiped his hand across the soft material making sure it was nice and smooth. He adjusted the candles in the middle, double-checking to make sure they were centered.  He adjusted the two vases of red roses on each side of the glowing candles to make the color stand out more.

He stood back and took a look around the room. He knew everything was perfect, but his nervous energy made him want to check everything again. He urged himself to be calm and for his heart to stop racing inside his chest. He wished he didn’t feel so jittery, but no matter how much he told himself to, he couldn’t stop himself from being a bundle of nerves.

Calm down Toby! He thought. Everything is perfect and in place! You have nothing to worry about! Now you just have to ask her to marry you! He reminded himself.

That last thought had Toby patting the inside pocket of his jacket. He sighed in relief when he felt the bump of the top of the box. He pulled it out of his pocket, running his palm along the velvet black box before opening it. Standing upright inside and staring at him was a beautiful, shiny diamond ring.  It was the perfect size, the perfect cut. Even the little pink diamonds trailing down the sides were perfect because pink was her favorite color. It was perfect ring for Megan.

Megan was perfect for him too and Toby couldn’t wait to spend the rest of his life with her. As he stood on her parents’ big, beautiful sun porch where they had their first date, he let his mind travel back to the time when he knew that this moment would come someday.

Toby pulled the earbuds from his ears as he stepped off the bus. Even though he looked calm, he was bubbling with excitement. He had just arrived home from a seven-day trip to Florida with his high school band mates, and he couldn’t wait to tell his parents about the trip.

His blue eyes scanned the crowd of families and kids being reunited around him and smiled as he saw his parents across the road. He wrapped the ear buds around his ipod and stuffed it into his duffel bag.

As he got closer, he saw a large red stain on his mother’s shirt and a tear beside the stain. “Mom, what happened?” Toby asked concerned. As his mom rolled her eyes she huffed, “Ask your dad.”

As his mom stomped off towards his dad’s car, his dad slapped him on the arm. “It’s nothing you need to worry about, son.” he said. His dad turned towards the car leaving Toby to wonder what was going on.

A few seconds later, he climbed into the backseat just in time to hear them arguing.  screaming filled the car. The screaming was something about a heated argument that had happened earlier that evening. From what he could gather, his dad squirted ketchup all over his mom and his mom threw a knife across the room, leaving a hole in the wall.

His parents were divorced and continued to fightconstantly. He figured they were both here because they couldn’t agree on who was going to pick him up.

There was no “Glad your back Toby! “or “How was your trip“.  It was all about them and their issues again.  They didn’t care if he was gone for seven days or seven months.  All they cared about getting the last word in. He wished he was back in Florida.

As the screaming continued, he reached in his duffel bag and retrieved his ipod.  He plugged the earbuds in his ears and turned the volume up. The music started and he was back in Florida, remembering all the fun times. Remembering all the laughing and carrying on he did with her. Megan. Even though they had been in school together since kindergarten, they hadn’t known each other. So, when he offered to ride a roller coaster with her since her other friends were already paired off, he didn’t think anything of it. But that ride lead to laughter and then to ice cream afterwards. From that second day on the trip, they had been together every day. They went shopping, rode rides, and watched fireworks blow up in the sky. He felt a spark with her that he hadn’t felt with any other girl before. Just the thought of her made him break into a smile.

The happiness of remembering Florida with her came to an end when the car stopped in front of his mom’s house and his parents were still at each other’s throats. Disappointment fell over him like rain when he realized he wasn’t in Florida anymore and he was home with parents that didn’t seem to miss or care for him at all.

He didn’t move from his place in the backseat.  He watched as his parents got out of the car and bickered all the way up the walkway. He sighed, pressed his back into the seat and just like that the disappointment washed away as Megan came into his head. Warmth traveled through his body and his heart beat against his chest. He felt so happy, like he was on his way to falling in love with her. He had another strong feeling –one that was telling him that no matter what happened, that someday he would be together with Megan forever. That no matter what happened in their lives, their fates would be intertwined. He didn’t know where those feelings came from.  Maybe he was just trying to make himself feel better.  Whatever the reason, he was thrilled about it.

Toby still had that feeling even as the days passed after the Florida trip, even as they broke apart and went out with different people. When they met up again in college, he knew he could travel the world and never find anyone else. Megan was the one he was meant to be with and he wouldn’t trade her for anything.

“Toby,” Megan’s voice came to his ears. He hurried, struggling to put the box back in his pocket. A moment later, she came through the French doors. Seeing her standing there in a long, flowing red dress with her dark brown hair pinned up and curly, Toby’s heart skipped a beat. He didn’t know how he had ever gotten so lucky as to have a woman as beautiful as Megan.

Megan’s brown eyes looked around the room. Her gaze traveled over the table of candles and roses. Then her gaze traveled to the shiny pink and red hearts that hung from the ceiling. Toby knew she loved it by the way the smile spread across her face. Valentine’s Day was her favorite holiday. That’s why he had even taken the extra time to put heart stickers on all of the sun porch windows.

“This is beautiful,” she stated. She looked around once more before walking over to her boyfriend. “Happy Valentine’s Day,” she said before giving him a kiss.

He smiled as he inhaled her scent, which had always reminded him of sugar and vanilla. “Happy Valentine’s Day,” he said back, as they broke apart.

Megan looked around again and when she looked back, Toby was standing there with a glass red wine that matched her lips. She smiled, took the glass in her hand and took a sip of the wine. Her mind took her back to their first date that had taken place right here. It was wonderful and magical.  It was just like a dream –just like being with him for the last two years had been. Even though their lives had taken them in different directions after the Florida trip, Megan had always known that they would find their way back to each other.

A noise from the corner of the sun porch brokeher out of her thoughts. She turned herhead to see a small heater. She had wondered why she was warm despite the February air being so cold. Then she noticed all of the letters and little notes placed around the sun porch. As she moved closer, she recognized them as the notes and letters they had sent over the last two years.

Then Megan walked closer, seeing a photo album sitting on the windowsill. She flipped through it and saw a picture of them together in Florida when they were teenagers.  The rest of the pictures were from when they met back up again in college. She closed it, running her fingers over the front. She looked around the room again.  There were memories of their time together placed all over the sun porch.

Even though she had known about this dinner weeks ago, she never expected Toby to go to the trouble of making this night so special. She turned to him; still shocked to see everything he had done to make her feel like the most special woman on the planet. “Why’d you do all of this?” she asked. Toby slowly took her hand in his. “Because I love you Meg,” Toby started.  “I have always known deep inside that this day would come,” he continued. Before she could even ask what he was talking about, Toby dropped down to one knee. He pulled out the box, revealing the ring. “I always knew that I would ask you to be my wife,” he said with a smile. Megan’s body shook as tears of joy exploded onto her cheeks. She felt so overwhelmed, but managed to say the one word she had always known she would say to him one day, “Yes. “

This was really cute :) The way they paired up for the roller-coaster was sweet, and I liked how you gave us the flashback, rather than just telling us about how they met; it was more personal and helped the reader get a sense of the characters. I would maybe suggest to not start so many sentences off with 'he' (especially at the start) and keep an eye out for 'your/you're', but, all in all, it's a well-written and sweet story. Good job :)
