A very personal poem about my parent's divorce and the aftermath from it.

Always knew we’re never happy;
Never was a day without an argument or demand.
Constant yelling and nagging;
Why oh why did this happen?
Mother demanded; father filed.
War of words with no winners;
Two young souls in the middle,
Trying to figure it; stay out of it.
Crying inside the family was; under all the yelling.
A marriage incapable of surviving;
Whose telling the truth?
He said, she said,
Which parent can a young soul believe?
Why couldn’t we be a family?
Why not be like the family portrait?

What’s mine?
What’s yours?
Oblivious to the pain you inflect;
Consequences you never saw coming.
For the young souls caught in the middle;
Ever noticed the pain in their eyes?
Too busy worrying you, never mind them you raised.
Acting you never loved or cared;
Just push them aside.
Leaving them to fend for themselves;
Damage is done;
Everything left up to lawyers and judges.
Why couldn’t we be a family?
Why not be like the family portrait?

Time moves on,
Details become clear; yet still a blur.
Pain turns to scars;
Still raw, but fading into oblivion.
Memories of the moments still exist,
Unforgotten memories for two young souls;
Whose lives changed forever.
Grown-up now, still haunted by the memories.
A ‘D’ word silenced to their ears and mind.
Never was like a family portrait,
A father never the same; forever bitter and disgust.
A mother choosing to lose her kids for a life; of newlywed bliss and freedom.
A brother burying the pain without proper understanding; leaving loved ones behind.
As for me, memories never gone and scars still invisible…eight years later.

I'm so sorry for what happened. But the fact that you're moving on is a good thing :)
It's becoming a cliche but I really like this too "Pain turns to scars"---This is my favorite line :D

I think everyone that has been through this can relate to this and this was hard for me to write because it brought back horrible memories, but I felt it was something I had to share because you don't read poems about divorce although many tell tales on their profiles about it.

Thanks for commenting! Always looking forward to your comments! Thanks!

As a child of divorce, I suffered this way. As a man who broke off a relationship with someone I shared children with...I am certain my children felt this way. This poem was poignant and heart felt. It touched me deeply. Thank you!

Divorce is not a fun thing to go through and it can really mess-up alot of people. It did for me when my parents split and later divorced. Lesson learned is that everything happens for a reason and all we can do is hope that we learn from it and move on.

Glad that you love the poem! Sorry about what you went through...that sucks.

This poem is absorbed with lots of pain and suffering, it is so deep that each and every words goes inside the heart and left us disturb. A perfect portrait of pain felt by children who suffered this, loved it !

Thank you...it was a rough time in my life and for years I've been trying to think of a way express that period in my life in poetry, but I never could put the words down on paper to describe it...until now.

I can not say this is an amazing poem for the sadness is so clear and well portrayed.Divorce s the worst part of ones life it keeps u hanging between life and death with uncertainty.To me I have a mother and need non beside her for my dad passed away before I recognized the world issues.So to support with the right words is hard for me.Good Job.
