‘No human being will ever know the truth, for even if they happen to say it by chance, they would not even have known they had done so.’

The pain was insufferable, but worse was knowing what would happen once the hurt drifted away. He released an ear-piercing screech whilst curling into himself, and then it stopped. He was gone but still there, dead whilst alive. Resurrected yet murdered. His eyes fluttered open revealing his glassy wine flavoured eyes; they released a tear and with that tear left the last shred of humanity. A fully converted vampire, his human life and memories were little more than ashes.

The first couple of months were excruciating. Kaden would look upon his prey with callous eyes, yet he felt a small blow of guilt when he looked back at each victim. Nothing more than a killer he lived only for the blood. He risked exposing vampires many times but the reckless young boy didn’t care. It wasn’t until after two and a half years of brutal survival on the streets when Kaden met the man that changed him forever.

“You’re rather careless, I hope you do intend on becoming more discreet in your methods of prey,” came a whisper from the shadows. It was a dreary city day and tucked away in an alley-way was Kaden with his fresh snack. His head snapped toward the voice and –not used to conversation- started to back away from the corpse. A hand clasped firmly on Kaden’s shoulder and turned him around so that he may see the intruder- a man who appeared to be in his mid-twenties. He was tall and sturdy, but no one could possibly notice his physique as they would be too mesmerized by the striking face which was framed by a mop of extensive golden hair. At that moment Kaden was glaring into his intense eyes and studying his expression.

“What do you want with me? I’m warning you I will kill you.” Snarled Kaden, scraping his fangs against each other.

“I’d like to see you try,” replied the man as he smirked, which revealed his own set of fangs.

Kaden narrowed his eyes, “I have to eat.”

“Like this?”

“What do you mean? How do you prefer to feed, at a table with tea?” Sarcasm dripped from his deep voice as he raised himself to the intruder’s height.

“Jeez, vampires like you really piss me of; but being the generous guy I am I’ll play Mother Teresa.” He turned away with a low chuckle and gestured for Kaden to follow.

“I don’t even know who you are; I’m not just going to follow you.”

“…Then don’t.” He replied, not even turning back to glance at Kaden.

“Look- will you wait a second!”

“You either follow, or you don’t.”

The stranger grinned, hearing the squelch of old shoes as Kaden’s footsteps followed behind him. They reached a small, tidy house nested in a wood far away from the city. The stranger stood by the door and after a second or two the door opened, exposing the most beautiful young woman Kaden had ever seen. Short blonde hair framed her heart-shaped face and long, full eyelashes edged her bright green eyes. A smile grew as she looked up at Kaden, her hair blowing in the wind of a, now cold and dark, winter night.

“Well, long time no see, Ty,” she said, smiling at the stranger next to Kaden.

“I’ve been busy, and you know I wouldn’t come to you empty handed.”  Kaden’s eyes widened as the strangers reply registered in his head. ‘Empty handed’, was he a gift?

“Hey, little guy don’t worry, I’m not going to eat you.” The woman smiled as she looked down at Kaden. “So what have you brought me Ty?”

“I found him down Second Street, having a naughty snack.”

“Oh dear” she said, raising an eyebrow at Kaden-who started cowering under her strong gaze. “Hey, no worries. We’ll fix you up, come on in.” She stood behind the open door and didn’t leave Kaden’s gaze as he carefully stepped through the doorway.

“Who are you?” Kaden asked, frowning as they sat down on a large white couch in an open room holding only the couch and a large television. The woman crossed her legs and flashed a sly smile at the other man.

“My name is Tyrell, or Mother Tyrell to you,” he said with a smirk at Kaden. Kaden released a menacing snarl, bearing his fangs. The olive-eyed beauty stood up and walked over to Kaden.

“None of that, and Ty leave the poor boy alone. I’m Athanira, though you may call me Ash.”
