There are different  ways to put out a candle.

You could blow it out.

You could lick your fingers and pinch the wick.

But next time you need to put out a candle,

 do me a favor

and instead of taking that sweet pleasure of blowing out the flame,

put on the lid.

Watch the flame suffocate.

 Watch as it struggles,

searching for oxygen to consume.

Watch it die.

 Feel your heart wrench.

Resist the urge to take off the lid before it snuffs out.

Understand that you feel bad for this nonliving thing.

And maybe start feeling the same way toward actual living ones.

If you would take the time to move the worm

that has wondered onto the sidewalk back to the grass while it’s raining,

take the time to smile at a stranger.

Be kind to your fellow living.

Let your heart wrench when you see them struggle.

Don’t resist the urge to lend out a helping hand

to those in need.
