I held her hand and stood beside the scene where I had crashed long ago. It seemed like only yesterday my life was complete with a new car, hot girlfriend and popularity not in a million years would I have thought that all of that were to crash and burn just like my car, but the accident seemed to be my miracle. If it weren’t for my miracle then the ‘star’ holding my hand right now still may have been twinkling up in sky without me. As for my life right now it’s nothing like before, my life is gone like my car. When it’s patched and repaired it’ll look the same but it won’t be the same like it had when it was still hot and running.

“Yo Manning my man. Give it to me up here” Darren said coming in for a hi five.

“What’s the occasion?” I asked.

“Word is you scored Marsha Hughes or as I call her Monster Hughes” he said pulling a chair from behind.

I cocked and eyebrow up and laughed loudly.

“Now where’d you hear this?” I asked.

“Who doesn’t know man it’s on everyone’s Myspace page, now dish the dirt when did you two y’know.”

“She was so digging me man. Check it, we were at Harmony’s birthday bash, Marsha was drunk an all and she kept staring at me. At first I was like she’s just drunk, then she came to me and said ‘Greg I’m gonna be straight with you. I want to be your girlfriend” I smiled as I finished.

“That’s it?” Darren said looking disappointed.

“Of course that’s it.” I said.

“What a bore” he said yawning and closing his eyes.

“Don’t matter. As long as I have a hot girl on my side with a brand new Porsche-”

Darren’s eyes suddenly opened as I said Porsche.

“What did you say?” he asked his eyes widening.

I shrugged.

“Oh c’mon you didn’t tell me you had a Porsche”

“You didn’t ask” I grinned.

“School’s almost over, lets take it for a quick spin” he said.

“No way man. I promised Marsha that she were to come with me for a spin before anybody.”

“We’re like brother since pre-school an you’d choose a girl over a brother. C‘mon man B.B.H.” he said.

“What is that? Blacks before Hispanics?
“Mate, for you’re information I am brown, and the term black is racist to us and you should no that white boy. Besides man it means ‘Bro’s before hoes,’ get it through you’re head.” he said knocking onto my skull.

I groaned and agreed.

“But you’re sitting at the back.”

“B.B.H man” he said again.

“Not this time, you’re either at the back or you can take the bus.”

Darren rolled his eyes and stared at the clock on the wall till the bell rung.

Darren got up and rushed out the door.

As I got out the door, Marsha was standing outside my class filing her nails and chewing gum.

“Ready sweetie?” she said giving me a kiss on the cheek.

I nodded and we walked to the Porsche to find Darren hugging the hood.

“Darren you’re gonna scratch it, besides how’d you know that this was the one. I didn’t even tell you what it looked like.”

“Like I said we’re brothers. Of course I’ll know” he said getting of the hood.

“Ugh, he’s coming with us, who‘s he?” Marsha said in disgust.

“You’re father, now hurry up and get in young lady” Darren said in a gruff tone.

“Ugh” she said disgusted.

“Get over it Hoe, while you’re with brother Greg you’re gonna have to deal with me. So tough luck.” he said getting into the back.

“Brother from another mother” she laughed.

“Boo!” Darren said doing thumbs down.

“Whoa now fellas. Can’t we get along?” I asked.

“Of course sweetie, just chuck this loser out and then we can get along just me and you” she said kissing me.

“Oh damn what a hoe” Darren said loudly.

“You know what just shut your filthy dirty black mouth.” she shouted loudly.

“Guys stop!” I said driving up the highway.

“Whoa now, don‘t be racist. You hoe” Darren said poking tongues and acting very childish.

“Usted Perdedor estúpido”

“I have no idea what you just said. But you’re still a racist hoe” Darren said.

I took my eyes from the road just a sec to try and stop them from fighting.

“Argh, your so fricking annoying. Why can’t you just die!” she shouted.

And with those words the craziest thing happened.

My Porsche smacked into a Truck. Do you know how they say when you’re a bout to die things turn out slow motioned? Well everything seemed as slow as slow-motion can get. My head felt as if it had been smacked around with a bat. It seemed as if it took four hours for the Air bag to pop out.

When I thought my life had ended, my eyes appeared to open.

I realised that I was in the hospital.

I tried getting up, but my body was to weak to even move.

“He’s awake.” I heard my mother say.

“Mum, what happened?” I asked.

“Son, you had an accid-” she began crying before she could finish.

“Mom, where’s Darren and Marsha?” I asked.

“Marsha’s okay, she only had minor injuries” she sniffled.

“And Darren?” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

Tears began rolling down my eyes.

“And Darren? Mum what about Darren!?” I asked loudly.

She shook her head abruptly.

“No, no, no, NO!” I shouted.

Marsha opened the curtains to my unit and began crying at my side.

“Marsha, I… I’m so sorry” I said crying heavily.

She shook her head as she lay her head onto my bed and sobbed like a baby.

It took us at least an hour for our grieving for Darren.

“Where’s Mrs Brian’s?” I asked.

“She’s with your friend in Unit C.”

“Marsha, I’m sorry” I began.

“Greg, me and my dad are moving. After what I said to Darren, I can’t live with that Greg. I’m leaving what I thought was home behind. I didn’t know him and I killed him, I literally wanted him to die and he did” she said sobbing quietly.

“You can’t do that. I mean we just got together and your leaving.” I said, tears forming into my eyes.

“Greg, this isn’t about me, or you. Nor is it about us. It’s about Darren” she said standing up and giving me a final kiss on my forehead.

“I love you” she said walking out of my unit room.

“Marsha” I whispered for the very last time.

I stared aimlessly out my mothers car.

“I’m not even sure if I should go school ma. Maybe I’ll find something else to do with my useless, no good life” I smirked.

“Hon, you’re seventeen you’ve got you’re whole life a head of you. I’m sure Darren-”

“Ma, don’t!” I said whilst flashbacks of the crash played in my head like a stupid film and then Darren’s flashback occurred. I could see Mrs Brian’s tears stream like river, her tears made me feel like I was drowning in them.

It’s hard for a kid to bury their mother or father, but a mother to bury her own child that she cared for and loved. I couldn’t function with that.

“Honey, are you going!” Mum said.

I smiled and sighed deeply.

“Wish me luck mum.” I said.

“Good luck, sweetie” she said, as I hopped out of the car.

Good luck to me were just two words, because if it were real all of Hudson High wouldn’t have given me the ‘ew’ look.

I walked into class.

“No way dude, the guy was sober and he drove like a drunk. What was he thinking, I can’t believe he killed our quarterback.” I overheard Henry say.

I pretended as if I hadn’t heard it.

I walked over to Vincent to sit next to him.

“Sorry man, I don’t sit next to murderers.” he said coldly while putting his legs onto the chair.

I didn’t answer, instead I just walked out of the class feeling sick to my stomach.

I ran to the field and stood on the sidelines reminiscing on how I use to cheer Darren on like a crazy goose.

“I’m so sorry!” I said falling to my knees.

“Crying aint gonna bring him back” a gruff voice said.

I looked up at Coach Grant covering the sun.

“I know, and I know that I can’t bring him back. But it’s all my fault” I said sobbing.

“Harden up kid, just because someone’s life ends doesn’t mean you have to act as if your life’s ended to.” he said in his gruff voice.

“It’s easier said then done” I said my voice calmed a bit, yet tears ran down slowly.

“Look kid, it’s okay to grieve. Just don’t do anything stupid okay?” he said.

I nodded slowly wiping my tears.

“It’s not often, you see a man crash and burn” he said.

“Yeah, and cry like a baby” I said picking myself up.

“Thanks coach, how’d you know I was here?” I asked.

“This is my field, I always know when anyone’s on my field.” he said his voice not so gruff.

“Awkward” I mumbled.

“Get back to class k kid, or you’ll get both of us in trouble”

I smiled and nodded.

I went to class to have everyone stare at me with disgust.

I sat in the spare desk at the back, not caring what they were thinking.

Class seemed to drag on for at least years.

The bell rang for interval.

I went and sat at the spot me and guys would sit.

“Sorry dude, the guy who use to have this spot just died” Henry said getting up.

“Yeah, but the other guy you knew hasn’t” I said.

“You’re right he hasn’t. But the guy in their” Henry said pointing to my chest.

“Yeah, well he has”

“Look Henry, if you knew what happened you wouldn’t be blaming this mess on me. So before you start pointing fingers start looking into the mirror. Because last time I heard you wanted Darren dead long before he took your place as quarterback!” I said walking away.

I went and sat under the old oak tree alone.

I saw him walk iver to the old oak tree and sit alone.

“Hey, um girls I’ll be right back” I said leaving my food and walking over to him.

I stood behind him and breathed in and then…

“Look, I know it wasn’t your fault.” someone said.

I turned my head quickly to see a girl with stunningly brown hair.

“Pardon?” I asked.

“It wasn’t your fault” she said.

“What wasn’t my fault” I asked.

“Darren’s accident” she said.

“Oh that” I whispered under my breath.

She sat beside me and smiled so beautifully.

I’d never believed in love at first sight never in a million years would I have believed in such nonsense, but seeing her sit down beside me and smile so exceedingly beautiful I couldn’t help but fall in love.

“Are you new here?” I asked.

She laughed loudly and abruptly.

“What’s so funny?” I asked.

“I’ve been in most of classes since fourth grade.” she said still laughing.

I scratched my head feeling a bit embarrassed.
“Are you in any of my classes now?” I asked.

Her light brown eyes shone as the sun came through the old oak tree and onto her eyes.

“No” she said.

How could I have missed this beautiful creature I thought.

“Did I ever talk to you?” I asked.

She laughed again, slightly softer.

“You asked me a lot of things in fourth and fifth.”

“Nothing stupid right?” I asked.

“That I’ll keep as a secret” she said grinning hugely.

“Oh c’mon, hint?” I asked.

She shook her head and looked at me.

“Look, you’re a great guy. An awesome one in fact. You just don’t notice people.” she said.

“Oh” I mumbled.

“Look Greg, I’ll tell you one thing. You had a crush on me when we were in fourth grade” she said blushing.

Her cheeks brushed a nice bright red.

“That was just probably puppy love. I mean I was only in fourth grade right?”

Her name, what’s her name! I thought.

“Let me guess, you don’t know my name” she grimaced.

“Oh no. I know you’re name. It’s gimme a sec?” I asked.

“It’s okay, I get that a lot” she said her voice sounded a bit off.

“Diane?” I guessed.

She laughed weakly and stood up.

“Well nice meeting you Manning.” she said smiling, her smile looked broken.

“How could he have forgotten my name?” I mumbled to myself.

“The guy that I wished would be mine for as long as I could remember can’t even remember my name” I said as tear’s ran down my cheeks.

“How can he have forgotten the name Rain?. It felt like only yesterday he asked me if he could kiss me through the rain. Now he doesn’t even know my name. He even called it mean puppy love, is that what they call it?” I said to myself sobbing softly.

It’s okay to dream, but it hurts when it doesn’t come true I thought.

I walked over to the fountain and sat their thinking about him.

“Why did you have to grow up?” I whispered to myself as I wiped my tears that he’d never see me shredding.

The rest of the day I couldn’t get her out of my head, wondering what her name was and what I had said to her back in fourth grade.

I walked out of Gym class dreading to walk home, after thirty sprints in Gym class because Vincent hadn’t given me up a seat.

I walked home as slowly as a snail.

Dragging my tired body along.

I got home wanting to have a nice long shower.

“How was your day hon?” Mum asked.

I didn’t answer, instead I slouched to the bathroom to have my luxurious shower.

After that I got into something comfy and downstairs.
“So how was school sweetie?” she asked again.

“Ma, do you remember a girl in fourth grade and she had nice brown hair?” I asked.

“Young girl brown hair” she said thinking.

“I can’t quite get her name. It started with R, that’s all I can get”

“So how was school?” she asked again.

“Rough” I answered.

“I’m sorry hon. I know it’s rough but you have to school”

“I know ma. I’m doing this for you” I said kissing her on the cheek and going to my room.

I flopped on my bed thinking about the letter R.

“Renne?” I guessed.

“Rebecca? Darn what is it?” I yelled.

I couldn’t stop thinking about her for the rest that day.

It had been a week since I had last seen him at school. Maybe he didn’t want to come back to school I thought.

I shrugged and walked to school.

I hadn’t gone to school for at least a week.

Mum dropped me off to school while I saw her walking to school.

“Ma, stop here” I said.

I hopped out of the car to her looking at me, her smile not the same as yesterday. It was broken like it was when she walked away from me.

“Hey” she began.
“Hi” I said.

“Need company?” I asked.

“Yeah” she said walking at a fast pace.

“So what do you have first?” I asked.

“Music. You?”

“English” I answered.

After the short conversation our trip to school was all but a awkward silence.

“See ya Greg” she said with a broken smile.

“Bye-” I said still not knowing her name.

I rushed to class and sat alone in the back whilst everyone gave the ‘ew’ look.

“I didn’t do it” I said in defiance, to anyone who even cared to listen to me.

“Shut up.” someone said.

“You all have issues” I said getting up and walking out of class yet again.

“At least we’re not careless drivers who kill!” someone shouted out the window.

I pretended not to hear that.

“Rough day huh?”

“Don’t get me started” I said to see the girl starting with the letter ‘R’

I smiled exceedingly.

“Don’t worry about them they don’t even know what went down. Plus they don’t know even know you if they don’t believe you.” she said sweetly.

“It feels good to finally have someone on my side” I said.

“I always wished you were beside me” I mumbled.

I looked at him and smiled, ever since he had forgotten my name, my smile sort of faded into what was now not a smile at all. Just a girl smiling on the outside, but broken on the inside.

If only he knew how I felt I thought.

She mumbled something under her breath and looked at me with that same broken smile.

Do it man! My head kept urging me to ask her on a date.

Go for it, or she’ll find someone else and she’ll never be your’s. You’ll regret this the voice in my head said driving me crazy.

She began walking away as spit’s of water began dripping.

“Ummm...” I said loudly.

“Yeah?” she said looking back.

“Nothing, it’s nothing” I said dully.

“Oh” her voice broke as she walking away.

I don’t even know her name and I want to ask her out, what the hell is up with that? I thought.

It began to rain heavily and I stood their in the rain feeling stupid then it hit me.

“Wait!” I called out into the rain.

I ran up to her and stood their.

She looked at me and she was crying. I couldn’t tell really because the rain was making her look more beautiful then ever.

I wiped her tears and smiled.

“I’m sorry I forgot.” I said.

“Don’t, I can’t stand it anymore” she said as we both stood in the rain.

“Rain I’m sorry” I apologized in the rain.

She looked at me shocked in awe.

“Kiss me through the rain” I blubbered out.

She looked at me and her brown eyes widened.

“What?” she asked as her eyes widened.

“I’m sorry I forgot?” I said.

“No, no after that.”

“Rain I’m sorry” I said.

I sighed and looked at her.

“And after that” she asked.

“Kiss me through the rain” I whispered.

I took her hand and kissed her, between our kiss I could feel her smiling and for the first time I could tell that her smile wasn’t broken at all.

I held her hand and stood beside the scene where I had crashed long ago. It seemed like only yesterday my life was complete with a new car, hot girlfriend and popularity not in a million years would I have thought that all of that were to crash and burn just like my car, but the accident seemed to be my miracle.
