INT. GRAHAM'S HOUSE, HALLWAY. NIGHT

We are in the hallway of a small terrace house. Through a glass door to the left we see the flickering light from a TV. GRAHAM can be heard in the room. He is thinking aloud, 'Umming and Ahhing'. PAMELA, GRAHAM'S wife is cooking in the kitchen clinking pans, happily singing (quietly to herself).

CUT TO:

INT. GRAHAM'S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM. NIGHT

We see GRAHAM. He is sat in a large worn armchair bathed in the light from his TV. GRAHAM (late 40's) is a large barrel shaped man, ex armed forces with a large handlebar moustache. He has a warm face but hard. He has clearly worked in rough conditions. Resting on his legs is a lap tray with the TV remote, pen, paper, calculator and a knife and fork. GRAHAM is a man who likes order, he has a specific way he lives his life and that is how he enjoys it. Next to his chair is a cheap lager poured into a glass On the TV is Countdown.

TV(o/s)

So there are the numbers. Total is 136, here we go.

The music starts and the contestants begin to solve the puzzle. GRAHAM works too, he has already written the numbers on his pad. He isn't a stupid man but works slowly. As the timer almost runs out he reaches for the remote and pauses the TV. PAMELA (PAM) comes into the room from the kitchen carrying GRAHAM'S dinner. They do not eat at the same time. PAM is a cheery lady in her mid 40's dressed casually in a thick woolen jumper. She looks slightly dowdy but her eyes are bright with love.

PAM

How are you doing love?

GRAHAM

Well they get longer in the studio. They just make it shorter for TV. What have we got tonight?

GRAHAM slides the lap tray from his legs and pulls PAM down onto his lap. She lies across him holding his dinner.

GRAHAM

Bangers and mash, you beautiful star.

PAM takes a sausage from the plate and feeds it to GRAHAM. They are so in love.

CUT TO:

INT. GRAHAMS HOUSE, UPSTAIRS BEDROOM. NIGHT

PAM sits on the floor under the window. She is in silhouette but has changed into a nightdress. GRAHAM comes to the open doorway. He is silent

PAM

Stay safe. I love you.

CUT TO:

EXT. GRAHAMS HOUSE. NIGHT

SIMON, GRAHAM'S work partner is leant on his car outside. SIMON is in his early 30's. A slight man he feels and acts like one of the lads but unbeknownst to him he is socially awkward. GRAHAM'S friendship with him is based on his sympathy for SIMON. SIMON is unaware of this. PAM is looking down on the scene from the upstairs window.

SIMON

(Looking up at PAM throughout)

Ready to roll?

GRAHAM

Of course. Let's go.

PAM waves at the men. GRAHAM never looks back but get's into the car. SIMON waves and smiles.

CUT TO:

INT. SIMON'S CAR. NIGHT

SIMON

(Getting into the car)

She's a lovely lass, your Pam.

GRAHAM

(Distracted)

Yeah she's the best.

SIMON starts the car and pulls away into the night.

CUT TO:

INT. SIMON'S CAR. NIGHT

SIMON and GRAHAM sit silently in the car. They are night watchmen for a security company. They work in the mobile unit travelling to several locations a night. Right now they are parked on a dark industrial estate. The gates to the yard are locked and all is quiet.

SIMON

She's never had it so good she says. I mean it's fantastic. We are always at each other.

GRAHAM

(Disinterested)

Um...

SIMON

I can't believe you. Be happy for me, we're

mates. I'm married to a beautiful woman and she loves me and my massive dick.

A dark shape moves behind the car. It is reflected in the wing mirror. GRAHAM is watching it.

GRAHAM

I'm over the moon for you.

SIMON

(Sarcastically)

I can tell. It's just so unexpected. One day

I want to be like you and P..

An alarm starts to sound from one of the warehouse units behind the locked gate. GRAHAM and SIMON snap forward. There is an orange glow from the windows as a small fire starts to take hold. A handful of shapes can be seen running behind the fence.

SIMON

(Ecstatically)

Fucks sake!

SIMON leaps from the car pulling out a bat from his foot well. He marches towards the gate which is still locked. Some of the shapes start to run at the gate but seeing SIMON turn and head back behind the warehouse. SIMON shouts and rattles the gate like a caged animal. He can just reach the hoody of one of man and he pulls him towards the fence snarling at him.

GRAHAM is still sat in the car. He leans over and turns the headlights on, sighs heavily and steps out walking slowly towards SIMON. A shape rushes past him on the opposite side of the car and leaps on to SIMON'S back. A woman is tearing at his head and face, punching down on him. She is almost hysterical. GRAHAM reaches for her neck and throws her back off SIMON her head bouncing off the bumper of the car. She slumps dazed and shocked.

SIMON holding the bat at its midpoint smashes the handle down and into the hooded man's face splitting his nose. He collapses back and scrabbles away from the gate. SIMON pushes on the gates and where the chain has been loosely tied a gap opens between them. He tries to climb through but can't quite make it.

WOMAN

(Crying)

Gary....Gary

SIMON turns back towards the woman. He looks down on her and then his stare turns towards GRAHAM. GRAHAM'S face is apathetic. SIMON reaches for the woman, he pulls her up sharply by her arm spinning her around. He kisses her neck. She weeps and panics.

HOODED MAN

Don't you fucking...

The man is still on the floor, he is incapable of helping his partner.

HOODED MAN

(Screaming)

Asshole! Bastard! Cunt! Fucking cunt!

SIMON slams the woman's head on the bonnet of the car. Her eyebrow is cut. He presses hard on the side of her head holding her down.

SIMON

What?!

The man stands up and moves to the gap in the fence.

HOODED MAN

(Pleading)

Debbie. Please....

SIMON

Fuck you.

SIMON pulls the woman up by her hair and marches her over to the gate. He pushes her over the chain hanging between them making the man jump back. SIMON pushes is elbow into the woman's back while using his other hand to undo her belt and jeans. She is struggling and the hooded man is trying to knock SIMON'S hands away from her but is just out of reach. SIMON pulls her jeans down to her knees.

GRAHAM steps forward.

GRAHAM

What are you doing?

SIMON

(Shouting)

You don't steal!

GRAHAM

Your wife?

SIMON

It's not that.

The hooded man and the woman look at each other. Her eyes panicked and pleading and he helpless and ashamed. She mouths 'I love you'. He cries.

CUT TO:

INT. GRAHAMS HOUSE, UPSTAIRS BEDROOM. NIGHT

The phone is ringing. The sodium light is coming through the net curtains. PAM is sat under the window leant against the radiator. There is no light in the room. PAM reaches for the phone but it is just too far. The answer phone clicks in.

GRAHAM

(Singing)

Baby now that I've found you I wont let you go.

I'll build my world around you. I need you so.

PAM joins in

ALL

Baby even though you don't need me, you don't

need me.

PAM

(exhausted)

I do need you. I do.

The answer machine beeps as the phone is hung up.

CUT TO:

INT. SIMON'S CAR. NIGHT.

GRAHAM hangs up his phone. In front of him bathed in the headlamps of the car SIMON begins to rape the woman. The hooded man is scrambling to his feet and off into the night. SIMON is laughing and beckoning to GRAHAM. GRAHAM gets out of the car and steps towards them slamming the car door.

CUT TO:

EXT. GRAHAM'S HOUSE. EARLY MORNING

GRAHAM is already out of the car and stood at the gate. SIMON winds down the passenger window and shouts across to him.

SIMON

(Chuckling)

Good night and sleep well friend.

GRAHAM doesn't speak. He has his back to SIMON. He exhales slowly dropping his head and walks inside.

INT. GRAHAM'S HOUSE, HALLWAY. EARLY MORNING

GRAHAM closes the door behind him

GRAHAM

(Wild, tired and irritable, spitting threw gritted teeth)

Keep your voice down, my wife is sleeping up

there. I am not your friend, asshole.

CUT TO:

INT. GRAHAM'S HOUSE, UPSTAIRS BEDROOM. EARLY MORNING

GRAHAM pushes open the bedroom door. In the morning light the room is much more visible. There is no furniture at all. On the floor by the radiator newspaper has been laid down and asleep on top of it with a blanket and pillow is PAM.

GRAHAM

(Stepping into the room)

Morning sweetness

PAM stirs awake. Her eyes focus on GRAHAM and she begins to smile. GRAHAM has knelt down next her. PAM leans forward to kiss him but is yanked back. Her wrist is handcuffed to the radiator. GRAHAM moves forward and kisses her.

PAM

(Starting to weep)

I am so sorry. I couldn't help myself.

GRAHAM looks down and realizing the newspaper is wet embraces PAM as she bursts into tears.

GRAHAM

Hey now, let's sort this out. Don't you worry.

GRAHAM releases PAM and helps her to her feet. He tenderly takes her hand and leads her out of the room.

INT. GRAHAM'S HOUSE, KITCHEN. MORNING

The radio is playing Mark Knophler "Romeo & Juliet". PAM is dressed and frying a breakfast. She is singing the lyrics she knows.

CUT TO:

INT. GRAHAM'S HOUSE, BATHROOM. MORNING

GRAHAM is sat on the edge of the bath. He has just showered and is naked. He stares into the middle distance listening to the sounds of PAM working happily beneath him in the kitchen. He makes a decision stands up and leaves the room.

CUT TO:

INT. SIMON'S HOUSE, BEDROOM. MORNING

The curtains are closed and the room is glowing red from their colour. There is slow movement under the quilt. SIMON is waking and he turns over. He is looking at a pretty young brunette sleeping next to him. She opens her eyes and stretches.

GIRL

(Whispered)

Morning.

SIMON doesn't answer but smiles.

EXT. GRAHAM'S ESTATE. MID-MORNING

Graham and Pam are walking together. They are holding hands and heading to the shops.

PAM

Simon lives down here. Why don't you give him a knock? You boys can go for a drink in town.

GRAHAM is obviously frosty about the idea. He doesn't speak but instead turns his head slowly to look down the street towards SIMON'S house. SIMON is stood on his door step in his boxer shorts. He is having a heated conversation with MR & MRS PEARCE. GRAHAM can only hear snatches as he crosses the top of the road.

SIMON

I haven't got a clue OK?

MRS PEARCE

(In tears)

Please, anything.

MR PEARCE hugs his wife and they turn and walk away. GRAHAM has stopped to watch this. PAM now across the street follows GRAHAM'S eyes.

PAM

No? Not a good idea? Oh he's got visitors

anyway. Come on.

CUT TO:

INT SIMON’S CAR. NIGHT

SIMON and GRAHAM are sat silently. They are parked in an abandoned industrial estate. The stillness is only broken by the odd car rushing past on a nearby dual carriageway. Neither man looks at the other. They are eating fast food burgers. The events of a few nights ago hang over them. SIMON is feeling particularly meek. Finally GRAHAM speaks.

GRAHAM

Pam and I were going to drop in yesterday.

SIMON

(His throat is dry and his voice cracks as he speaks)

Oh yeah?

GRAHAM

Mmm. You had guests? Your parents?

SIMON

Yes

(Then realizing what and who Graham saw)

No, not my parents. A friends. They were upset.

GRAHAM

It’s not my business.

SIMON

It’s nothing. Their daughter, an old school friend is missing.

GRAHAM

And they think you know something about that? Surely she’s big enough to look after herself.

SIMON

Basically what I said. They’re desperate. I said I would let them know if I heard anything.

The conversation drops dead. The awkward air returns. GRAHAM ignoring the atmosphere reaches down and turns the radio on. SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE is playing. SIMON breathes deep and speaks.

SIMON

Can we talk about the other night mate?

GRAHAM

I don’t see why we have to.

SIMON

It just all got out of hand very quickly. I think we should talk about it. Have a story encase the police get involved.

GRAHAM

Why would they. We are security...

SIMON

(Cutting GRAHAM off)

You know why. You know mate don’t make me say it.

(Pause)

The violence and the...

GRAHAM

Just stop thinking about it.

SIMON

(Pause)

I can’t.

GRAHAM

(Closing down, cold)

Drive the car.

SIMON

Mate.

GRAHAM

Please drive the car.

SIMON starts the car and they pull away into the night.

CUT TO:

EXT. GRAHAM’S HOUSE. DAWN.

The car pulls up. The sun is starting to rise. GRAHAM steps from the car and heads inside without looking back. SIMON lingers for a moment still desperate to talk. Giving up he drives off.

CUT TO:

INT. GRAHAM’S HOUSE, UPSTAIRS BEDROOM. DAWN.

Red sunlight is streaming in. GRAHAM can be heard closing the front door and slowly climbing the stairs. Below the window lying against the radiator is PAM deep in sleep. GRAHAM enters the room and kneels next to her.

GRAHAM

Morning love.

PAM

(Breathing deep and stirring)

Hello stranger.

GRAHAM begins to run his hand along PAM’S right arm. PAM is smiling sleepily at him. At PAM’S wrist is a handcuff locking her to the radiator. GRAHAM undoes the lock and helps her to her feet. As PAM stands wet blankets are visible underneath her. GRAHAM kisses her forehead.

PAM

I’m sorry. I had an accident.

GRAHAM

Never mind.

Shots of PAM tidying up her blankets and changing clothes as GRAHAM lumbers slowly to bed. Finally PAM climbs in bed beside him and pulls herself close to him. GRAHAM is facing away from her looking out towards the window. GRAHAM is troubled.

CUT TO:

INT. SIMON’S HOUSE, UPSTAIRS BEDROOM. EARLY MORNING

SIMON is lying in bed awake. He is staring at the ceiling. Outside the sound of the street waking up. He thinks to himself quietly. The GIRL next to him wakes up. She straddles him letting her hair fall on to his face.

GIRL

Morning

They kiss passionately.

CUT TO:

INT. GRAHAM’S HOUSE, UPSTAIRS BEDROOM. DAY

GRAHAM wakes up in the bed alone. He can hear the radio downstairs in the kitchen. The bedroom door opens and PAM comes in with a cup of tea for him. PAM hands GRAHAM the cup and sits on the bed. GRAHAM strokes her hair absent-mindedly.

PAM

What’s the bother?

GRAHAM

It’s Simon. He’s been under a lot of stress. I’m worried he isn’t coping well.

PAM

Anything to do with his friends yesterday?

GRAHAM

Sorry?

PAM

The man and woman yesterday, they looked upset. So did Si.

(Light heartedly)

I’m not blind Graham

GRAHAM

Well yes that isn’t helping. One of his school friends is missing. They were her parents. He acted like he wasn’t worried but...

PAM

Say no more. Simon’s a sensitive soul. I’ll invite him for dinner tonight. He needs us to keep an eye on him, especially you Daddy Bear.

(She kisses his neck tenderly. GRAHAM becomes lost in thought again)

I hope she’s ok.

GRAHAM

Who?

PAM

Si’s school friend. Wake up sleepy head.

CUT TO:

INT. SIMON’S HOUSE, HALLWAY. DAY.

The phone is ringing. Simon can be seen in the living room sat in his underwear. He lifts himself up and walks to the phone. He obviously doesn’t get many calls.

SIMON

Hello?

PAM

Si love? Si, its Pam. How are you?

SIMON

(Not expecting a call from Pam attempts to turn on his bravado)

Hello sexy Pam. I’m great as always. How can I help? You looking for a real man because you found one. Say no more I’ll be right over.

PAM

(Laughing)

You daft sod. I’ve been speaking to Graham.

(This fills SIMON with dread)

He says you’re under some pressure right now. Maybe you want to talk about it?

(Pause, SIMON doesn’t know how to reply)

How about dinner tonight at our house? We’ll do something special, you can bring your lovely girlfriend I’ve heard so much about. We’d love to meet her.

SIMON

Yes ok. That sounds lovely Pam.

PAM

Great and you’ll bring your lady friend?

SIMON

Of course. See you tonight.

SIMON starts to put the phone down.

PAM

And Simon? Try not to think about her.

(Pause)

She’s a big girl, she’ll be fine.

SIMON

(Sheepishly)

Who?

PAM

Your school friend. She will show up.

SIMON

OK. Thanks.

SIMON hangs up.

GIRL

(From upstairs)

Who was that?

The GIRL appears at the bottom of the stairs. This is the first time she is clearly visible and she is thirty weeks pregnant.

SIMON

It was nothing. Graham’s wife asked if I could give him a hand with something. I said I could come over tonight.

GIRL

Great. I would love to meet them at last.

CUT TO:

INT. GRAHAM’S HOUSE, HALLWAY. NIGHT

There is a knock at the door and PAM answers it. SIMON is stood there alone.

PAM

(Beaming)

Simon. Where is your girlfriend?

SIMON

She wasn’t feeling well. She is really upset to miss out meeting you at last. It’s becoming a joke really.

They head into the living room together. GRAHAM is sat in his chair watching Countdown. GRAHAM turns off the TV and stands up to meet SIMON. The atmosphere is awkward as both men try to behave casually. This is followed by shots of the three of them sitting at the table eating and laughing however GRAHAM is keeping a close eye on SIMON and SIMON never looks genuinely comfortable.

CUT TO:

INT. SIMON’S HOUSE, LIVING ROOM. NIGHT

The GIRL is sat in the dark. She has her feet underneath her making herself small. She is bathed in sodium from the street lights and has clearly been crying. After a moment she stands walks to the phone and dials a number. The following conversation is cut with the dinner party. The GIRL listens intently to the phone ringing until it is answered.

MR PEARCE

(He sounds weak, exhausted)

Hello?

GIRL

(Pause, then breaking into sobs as she speaks)

Daddy. It’s Claire.

MR PEARCE

Claire? Sarah come its Claire!

There is the sound of MRS PEARCE rushing to the phone and taking the receiver from MR PEARCE.

MRS PEARCE

Claire, honey? It’s mummy.

CLAIRE

Hi mummy.

MRS PEARCE

Are you OK? Where are you?

CLAIRE

I'm fine. Everything is ok. I missed you. How have you been? How's dad?

MRS PEARCE

(Sterner than she expected)

Worried.

CLAIRE

(Pause)

I know. I'm ready to see you again but...I'm with Simon now.

MRS PEARCE

That little shit. We were there yesterday. He lied to my face the shit.

There is muffled cursing and frantic movement as MR PEARCE who is listening gets the gist. MR PEARCE takes the phone from his wife.

MR PEARCE

Baby I'm coming to get you.

CLAIRE

Dad no! Simon and I are together now. I want to see you but you have to understand. He doesn't know I'm calling you.

MR PEARCE

(Concerned)

He is looking after you? You can leave if you want right?

CLAIRE

Of course. I don't want to leave. We are going to be a family, all of us.

MR PEARCE

OK but we are still coming to see you, tonight.

CLAIRE

Can I speak to mum?

MR PEARCE

OK.

MRS PEARCE

Yes honey?

CLAIRE

Please put dad to bed. He wants to come here tonight but he sounds exhausted. I'm at least a couple of hours away and I'm not going anywhere. Come first thing tomorrow.

A key is put into the front door startling CLAIRE.

CLAIRE

I have to go.

MRS PEARCE

Oh OK. We love you sweetheart.

CLAIRE hangs up as SIMON comes in. He stands looking at her.

CUT TO:

INT. GRAHAM’S BEDRROM. NIGHT

GRAHAM is awake staring out of the window the streets are quiet.

CUT TO:

EXT. THE ESTATE, NIGHT

Calm and still. The distant sound of a dual carriageway. Then a man is running out of breath down an alley. He bursts onto GRAHAM’S street and rushes to the door in panic. He bangs on the door. There is a few seconds commotion as GRAHAM comes downstairs. The porch light comes on and GRAHAM looks out from the window and sees SIMON. GRAHAM opens the door. SIMON is wet with blood.

GRAHAM

(Keeping his voice hushed but furious)

What the bloody hell are you playing at? Pam is sleeping.

SIMON’S face is streaked with tears, his eyes red, he blubbers, looking at his hands and the blood on his clothes. GRAHAM sees the blood and doesn’t care.

GRAHAM

(In a warning tone)

Pam is sleeping.

SIMON

(Crying)

Please.

SIMON reaches forward and grabs GRAHAM’S forearms and hands as he slumps to his knees. Blood smears GRAHAM’S hands.

CUT TO:

INT. GRAHAM’S BEDROO., NIGHT

The lights are off but PAM is sat upright in bed waiting for GRAHAM as he enters the room.

PAM

Is everything alright love?

GRAHAM starts to dress. He is conscious of the blood on his hands so keeps his distance.

GRAHAM

It’s fine sweetheart. It’s Simon. He’s got some bother with his boiler. I’m just going to nip over and give him a hand.

PAM

What time is it?

PAM is climbing out of bed. She steps towards GRAHAM who retreats a little. She sees GRAHAM’S hands and accepts the lie he is telling her. PAM pulls the duvet from the bed and settles down by the radiator before cuffing herself.

GRAHAM

It’s no bother I wasn’t sleeping anyway.

GRAHAM is ready to go. He doesn’t approach PAM because of the blood. It is a stiff moment between them as he would normally kiss her.

GRAHAM

Go back to sleep. I will be back soon.

PAM blows him a kiss and then settles down care free. GRAHAM slowly closes the door.

CUT TO:

EXT. GRAHAM’S HOUSE. NIGHT

SIMON is stood outside. The front door is open and GRAHAM slowly walks done the stairs. He steps outside nodding to SIMON to start walking. GRAHAM closes the front door.

INT. SIMON’S HOUSE, HALLWAY, NIGHT

The walk back has calmed SIMON and his voice can be heard outside as they approach the front door.

SIMON (O/S)

I came home and she was having trouble. You know me mate, I’m useless most of the time but I had no idea what to do.

SIMON is trying to sound light hearted but still can’t help choking back sobs. They come in through the door and we see into the living room. The room is a mess. The furniture has been pushed back towards the walls; there are sheets and sofa cushions all over the floor some of them spattered with blood. In the centre wrapped in a blanket is CLAIRE. She is pale and still. GRAHAM is stony quiet and SIMON seeing this tries to break the silence.

SIMON

I panicked. I didn’t know what to do. It just got out of hand.

GRAHAM

Did you call an ambulance?

SIMON

(Guilty)

No... I thought I could...

GRAHAM approaches CLAIRE. He stands over her for a second before bending down.

GRAHAM

Is this your girlfriend Simon?

SIMON

Yeah...Claire. That’s her.

GRAHAM brushes hair back from CLAIRE’S face smearing some of the blood on her cheek. He can see clearly she is a young girl aged 15 or 16.

GRAHAM

The girlfriend who loves your cock?

SIMON

(Feeling the mood change, almost pleading)

Mate.

GRAHAM

(Biting the words)

She’s fucking dead...mate.

GRAHAM stands and turns to SIMON.

GRAHAM

Why didn’t you call an ambulance?

SIMON

I was panicking I didn’t know what to do.

GRAHAM

Why didn’t you call an ambulance?

SIMON

I just told you. I was out of my head with worry.

GRAHAM

Why didn’t you call an ambulance?

SIMON

(Conceding)

You know why.

GRAHAM

(Exploding with anger)

Because she’s a fucking child! You sick pervert. You’re girlfriend is a fucking baby, you scum.

GRAHAM paces trying to control his temper. He finally sits in an armchair which has no cushions and rests his head in his hands.

GRAHAM

Where are her parents?

(Pause)

Your missing friend? You devious cunt.

SIMON

She wasn’t happy there. She wanted to be with me.

GRAHAM stands and approaches SIMON.

GRAHAM

She didn’t know what she wanted. She’s a child.

SIMON

We we’re having a baby together. We we’re happy. I just wanted to do the right thing.

This throws GRAHAM and he retreats to the armchair to think. SIMON absent mindedly starts to clean up picking up sheets and cushions but avoiding CLAIRE’S body.

GRAHAM

Let’s call an ambulance now. It&rs
