Jessica was an adopted child. Everyone thought that she had a perfect family and a perfect life. She always smiles in front of the other students and acted everything was all right. Being clever, nice, pretty and wealthy, everybody looked at her as a perfect girl. Did anyone know that she was living in hell?

Her story was told by a grandmother, who had found her sitting alone in the street.

A grandmother found her sitting alone on the street. This grandmother retells her story to her grandson, Josephine.

“I met a girl named Jessica 3 years ago. She was sitting all by herself on the street. I thought she was sleeping but when I called her, she looked at me with tears on her eyes. She said she doesn’t where she could go. So, I took her home.”

Josephine smiled at his grandmother and said, “Grandma, you always invite strangers home. That is not safe for you.”

His grandmother held his hand and explained that she didn’t make any mistakes in bringing Jessica home. “No, my dear. This girl was special. She was really special. She is perfect my dear. This girl was a gift from God. She had told her story to me. I cried as I listen to her”.

Josephine was confused and then he asked, “What is her story grandma?”

Her grandmother smiled again and then she began her story about the girl.

“She was an adopted child. She’d got a wealthy family and good friends. Everybody was jealous at her. She is kind and pretty. One thing I love about her is that she loves God very…very much. However, she doesn’t have a perfect life though”.

“Mmm…why is that, grandma?”

“Well, she lives in hell my dear. Once she grew up, her parents started to abuse her. They said that she was not her child if she did not marry the man they had chosen. She was only 16 that time. How come they treat her like she was an adult? Jessica didn’t want to marry that man because he was too old for her. She wanted to study first. However, her parents wanted her to marry that wealthy man because of money. She said to me that money had taken all of her life and happiness. Just because of money, her parents forced her into a decision she did not agree to. Her parents also locked her in a room and did not give her any food or water. She cannot go to anywhere except school. She always cries in her room. She didn’t know who she wants to call for help. Poor child.”

Joseph looked at his locket and held it strongly. He was feeling something but he did not know what it was. So, he stood up and said, “Grandma, please continue her story”.

His grandmother smiled again and continued the story.

“One day, she managed to run away from her parents. She didn’t want to but if she stayed there, they will keep forcing her. She’s got nowhere to go. She doesn’t know what to do then. So, she walked around in the street until night. You do know, Joseph, that not all people in this world are kind. Jessica was very unfortunate at that time because two men tried to rape her. But my dear, God is very kind. She managed to escape from such terrible fate. She kept praying so that God would help her and protects her. However, she still felt alone. She sat in the street, in front of your Aunt Angelina’s house, and as I came out from there, I saw the poor girl. I still hope she was here with me. I wanted to stay with that girl.”

Josephine quickly sat besides his grandmother and held her shoulder, “Then, what happen to her? Where is she now? Is she okay?”

His grandmother held his grandson’s hand and her tears started to pour down her cheeks. “Well, my dear. I think it would be better if God takes her away. That’s why, I keep praying, so that she would be happy with God by now.”

Josephine held his locket once again and asked, “What…do you mean grandma?”

“Well, I mean, she was with God now. She died in 1998. She was sick. So, I brought Doctor Fred to the house. The doctor said that she was too weak to be healthy again. I knew there was no hope anymore. When the doctor went away, I went to her room and sat beside her. Though she looked very sick and weak, she smiled for me. She said that this is the only way to get rid of it. I cried when I saw her condition. She gave me a beautiful locket. I certainly didn’t want her to leave me. I hope that it would be alright. But…”

Josephine looked at his locket and gave his grandmother a looked. “Is this…the same locket she gave to you grandma?”

Grandmother was so surprised when she saw it. She shook her head and then Josephine looked at the window. “So, it was her then.”

His grandmother looked at him and Josephine stood up again. This time, he told his story with a girl he met two days ago. “Grandma, when I was sitting under a shady tree, I was upset because my friends at college didn’t want to be friends with me. They bully me because they said I’m a nerd. I don’t know what to do at that time. I thought I was useless. Then, I saw this girl and she was walking towards me. She suddenly sat beside me and she gave me a smile. I didn’t know that girl. I didn’t even ask her name. She asked me why I was sad and I told her everything. She seemed to understand me a lot. Then she gave me a locket, with a small picture of Jesus Christ, and she asked me to keep it always. She also wants me to pray all the time. I smiled and thanked her. She just gave me a smile and said, ‘Sure your grandmother will love you always’. I was confused. I looked at the locket once again, and then she was gone. That’s why I gave you a visit grandma.”

His grandmother stood up and touched Josephine’s cheek, “Bless you my child. Bless you. You’re so lucky to meet her spirit. Well, she died though. But, God sent her to you, to make you realize that there are a lot of people who care about you my dear. I am so…glad.”
Josephine smiled and then he hugs his grandmother. “I love you grandma.”

The next day, Josephine went to visit Jessica’s grave. He put flowers on the grave and prays. He smiled and said, “Dear Jessica. Thank you for the locket you gave to me. I appreciate your kindness. I knew you faced many problems, but I also knew, you’re a brave girl. Thank you. My grandmother sends her smile to you. Please Jessica. Be happy in heaven. I love you. Thanks.” He smiled again and then he saw Jessica’s spirit again. Jessica was waving to him and he replies it. This time, she went away forever, and that’s how, people moved on. Josephine was glad that she went away in peace.
