Taking back what you said can be difficult

A short story

"Today's the day!" Jean said blissfully while putting the little gift in his pocket, "I'm gonna tell her my true feelings"

"Carly is my childhood friend and to think falling in love with her... This could be more difficult than I thought "

After murmuring endlessly in his head he finally got to school front gate "After School would be the right time...right?"

Doubting himself and fidgeting his pockets while walking in the halls, He finally  saw Carly "There she is, I would say hi but she's talking to her friends. And im also pretty nervous"

The bells ring meaning the end of class, Jean calls Carly on the stairs "Hey Carly I need to talk to you for a sec"

"Sure" Carly replied

Jean finally whips out the roses and the tiny gift "Carly, I've always liked you" Jean said Perfectly just like in his head

"I've liked you since we we're ki-" "I'm not interested" Carly  said hastily

"What?" In total shock Jean tried to calm down as much as possible

"Is there someone else?"

"No Jean, It's just that I don't feel that way about you, Sorry"

Leaving after her heart crushing statement Jean was left there stunned and pale "Damn this hurts more than I anticipated"

Shortly after rejecting her childhood friend she walks home alone using her phone without any consideration

Meanwhile Jean snapped out of it and decided to run home accepting the fact that it was over, he then sees Carly walking aimlessly across the street

"It's her..." He then hears a zooming car headed straight for Carly

"WATCH OUT!" without any hesitation he sprints toward Carly and pushed her out of the way

A fuzzy voice was calling Jeans name, the excruciating pain made Jean pass out

Soon after he wakes up in a white room with his hands cold "Damn I got run-over" he whispered

Soon after the doctor came and said "Don't worry, the damage is only minimal thanks to the car slowing down fast enough, also the driver would pay for the fees so rest easy for a while, you can be discharged tomorrow but I suggest at least 2 days"

"No I'm fine, I can be out tomorrow" he replied

The day after, Carly was going to visit Jean only to find out he was already discharged

Her regret was giving him the wrong answer that day

The next morning Jean transferred out of school, in shock and regret Carly tried to call him but never answered

After 2 years, both of them entered college at the same school without knowing

At college library Carly saw Jean looking at the shelf for the first time in 2 year while remembering their childhood memories

She quickly tapped on his back to see him again

"Jea-"

"Oh sorry" cutting her off "uhh you go ahead"

Leaving her dazed she mumbled "does he not remember me?"

She quickly catches him outside the library

"Don't you remember me?"

"No, I don't"

" We were childhood friends!"

Jean finally cuts the act and said "Yea Carly"

"Oh you remem-"

"Was" cutting her off

"You broke my heart remember? Or did that just slip pass your mind"

"I never meant to..." She replied

"No, you did, it was loud and clear"

"Thank you" she murmured

"What?"

"I said thank you..."

Reignited by her words Jean accepts her apology and confessed again

"This time, is it a yes?" Pulling out the same gift 2 years ago

"Yes" she nods in tears

Very sweet yet sad story. Glad Carly finally said yes, since she realized that Jean saved her life those many years ago. Great job!
