The First Nice Day

One day, spring explodes from a long winter,

We hear the birds chirping and bees buzzing,

People and animals begin to stir,

Everyone wants to enjoy a warm spring.

A family has an afternoon picnic.

The children play together in the grass,

The little boy picks up a long thin stick,

And calls himself king of the garden pass.

Their mother looks on while the children play,

And she remembers better, younger days,

When a long stick could make reality fray,

To fun in an imaginative haze.

Harsh reality can’t touch children there

In a make-believe world where life is fair.
