As I walk to my new school I can’t help but look up at the blue sky, with a big smile on my face. People keep looking at me as I walk by. Some try to be polite and only give me a glance, while others are down right rude. They stopped in their tracks and watched in “aw” as I walked by. You maybe wondering why so many people on this busy street go out of their way to stop and stare at a girl who is still only in high school. It’s not because I’m stunningly beautiful nor have a hump growing out of my back.
It’s because I have sliver wolf ears instead of human ears. It’s normal in my world though to have animal ears instead of human ones. In fact everywhere I look I see all different kinds of ears on the people I pass. Some people have the same ears, like I see two people with bear ears. I see a girl about a year younger then me with cat ears and every bright orange eyes. This meant that the animal the lays within her is every bubbly which doesn’t mean she is. In fact she could be very shy and not chatty at all.
As I start to get out of the busy street people I can’t help but wonder if the people at school will be like that. I wonder if they’ll treat me differently then at my old school. It happened a few years ago when my animal spirit showed it self. I was sitting in my room when I felt an over whelming pain shoot through me. It was like my body was being poked with red hot iron spears. I dropped to the ground holding myself afraid if I even loosened my grip a little my body would smolder and become ash. The pain soon left I don’t know how long it lasted but it was still day light so it couldn’t be for that long. I stood every slowly because I could feel myself becoming dizzy. I stumbled my way to the bathroom right across form my room.
I turned the water foist on cold and splashed my face. As I looked up to my reflection I saw someone else looking at me. This girl had the same grayish, bluish, greenish eyes I had. And they widened with fear the same moment I felt mine do the same. But this girl had long silver hair instead of the dark brown hair I had. She also had silver wolf ears instead of human ones. I raised my shaky hand to touch the glass. The girl on the other side of the mirror followed me. That was when I realized that my animal spirit had awakened. Instead of my eye color changing my hair did instead. It freaked me out at first but soon I came to love my long silver hair that flowed past my waist.
The people at school were not so opened minded about my new change though. My friends treated me like an out cast, so did everyone else for that matter. They all treated me alike I was some deadly disease, even the teachers started to act like I wasn’t even there. Things got so bad everyone would just start to laugh whenever I tried to say something. One day I got up the courage and asked my old friends why everyone was acting so different. They just laughed at my question but they did answer.
“It’s because you’re a freak Rin. You’ve always been a freak. The reason no one talks to you or even listens to you is because your animal spirit is a disgrace. No normal animal spirit would change their masters’ hair instead of their eyes” With that they never spoke to me again. My dad finally had enough and sent me to this school.
I was so caught up in thought I didn’t even see a girl in front of me. I walked right into her which made her and me both fall. My books and hers fell in the grass beside us. I shook my head to get rid of the dizziness. As I opened my eyes I saw that the girl was standing in front of me offering her hand. I smiled up at her and took it. The long ribbon in her hair touched my hand it felt like a soft silk. When I stood up and she knew I wasn’t going to fall she dropped my hand like it was on fire or something. She walked briskly over to her books and picked them up; she didn’t even turn back to me or smile. She just ran off in a hurry and left me standing there dazed and confused of what just happened.
After I picked up my books and went to the front office to get my class schedule. I finally made it in time for 2nd hour; I knocked on the door and straightened my back. I opened the door to find that everyone had their eyes on me. They started mumbling to each other and the teacher. A sort gruff looking man gave me a warm smile.
“Why hello. You’re the new student, Rin North, right?” he asked me. I nodded with a smile. He returned the smile and walked over to a big closet in the back of the room. He came back with a big history book in his hand. He handed it off to me and told me to go sit in the back row next to, Hinata Light. As I walked down what seemed liked an endless hallway of eyes and chatter I came to a girl wearing all black and cleaning some dirt off her stuffed rabbit.
I sat down next to her and smiled at her. She didn’t even glance my way. The more I looked at her the more she looked familiar. It also dawned on me that her animal spirit was a rabbit and that her hair was a soft white color. Class passed by slowly as I kept trying to remember where I saw this girl from. When she moved her hair away form her I saw a long silver ribbon in her hair. That’s when I realized that she was the girl form this morning.
When class let out I went to walk up beside her when two boys pushed me out of the way. They started pulling on both her rabbit ears and started laughing. Hinata just stopped walking and stood there with tears in her eyes. A group of students was forming around the three of them. The group started to yell and make fun of her. Hinata stood there crying and clinging to her stuffed rabbit.
I could feel rage boiling up inside me as I watched this display of heartless bullying. I finally lost it when one of the bullies pulled her rabbit from her arms. I pushed my way through the crowd and punched one of the boys in the face. He stumbled backwards mainly because he wasn’t ready for it. The other boy grabbed my shoulder and spun me around so I was facing him. At the same moment I swung around and punched him in the gut. I walked over to the boy who was holding her rabbit and stood in front of him.
“If you don’t want to end up like your friends there I would suggest giving me that bunny your holding,” I told him. I reached out my hand and he gave to me with fear in his eyes. I went over to Hinata who was now laying on the floor crying. I helped her up and gave her, her bunny.
I helped Hinata out of crowd and out the front door. I could tell all eyes were on us. I turned around with a smile on my face and flipped the peace sign over my shoulder.
“Tell the office Hinata and I left early if you don’t mind,” I told no one in particular. After we got off the school grounds Hinata started walking by herself. We walked in a comfortable silence until we reached the street. While we walked she got out thread and needle and started to fix her rabbit. It was then I she turned to me with a smile on her face.
“Thank you for saving me and Senri, that’s his name’” she pointed to her rabbit. I smiled back at her and nodded. It was then when nothing was said that we became best friends. I would find out many years later that before that day she never spoke a word to any one, not even to her parents. I wondered why so I asked her why that was. She told me with a smile.
“It’s because you faced the same pain I had and yet you faced everything with a smile. It was then I decide I wanted to be just like you,’ she told me with a smile that she shows everyone.
