Alternate History Timeline

300AD Romans did not destroy the library at Alexandria, good move Rome, good move.

340AD Nubia merges with the Ethiopian Kingdom to create the Nubian Empire. Threat of invasion by the Nubian empire causes Roman scholars to relocate many Alexandrian documents to Europe.

480AD/0 Western Roman Empire falls, beginning a dark ages in Western Europe. Commonly remembered as The Fall, French historians use this as a starting point. Many Alexandrian scrolls are destroyed when Rome falls but many more survive in France and Greece. Nubia expands into Egypt and the Middle East.

600AD/120 Slavic peoples spread west into Eastern Europe but also south of the Urals and into the warmer climate of central Asia. Their powerful Cossack cavalry manage to conquer significant swathes of what we call Kazakhstan. After 100 years of civil war, Britannia begins rule under a single monarchy based in Londinium.

800AD/320 Vikings from Scandinavia merge with slavic people in the Baltics, creating the Kingdom of Rus, reaching from Sweden to central Asia. Germanic tribes come into conflict with the Rus Empire in northern Europe, allowing the Gauls (French) to expand in Western Europe.

850AD/370 The French Empire maintains order in Western Europe, relying on Alexandrian scrolls to stimulate technological progress and economic growth. This ends the Dark ages in Western Europe 500 years earlier than in our timeline. The Nubian empire adopts Islam as its official religion, renaming itself the Nubian Caliphate and adopting a pacifist stance, ceasing its expansion.

950AD/470 Russian clashes with the Byzantine Empire come to a bloody stalemate while Russian expeditions to the east plunder the secrets of gunpowder from Asian tribesmen. The Russians see the military applications for the powder, creating the first fire lances.

990AD/510 Russian empire breaks its treaty with Byzantium and sacks Constantinople thanks to the use of firelances. Remaining Germanic tribes unite in central Europe, wedged between the French empire to the south/west and the Russian empire to the north/east. The federation of Germania begins a tradition of neutrality and introversion, focusing on economic development.

1000AD/520 Russian Empire declares war on the Greek Republic which seceded from the Byzantine Empire just before the fall of Constantinople. Greek engineers are able to reverse engineer captured Russian firelances and the war becomes a bloody stalemate.

1030AD/550 After 30 years of war, Greece and Russia make peace. 9 months later, French forces arrive and immediately sue for peace, faced with Greek firelances. Greece and France become increasingly close trade partners. French and Greek academics combine their separate halves of an Alexandrian blueprint to begin construction of the first crude steam engine.

1033AD/553 German diplomats negotiate a quadrilateral peace agreement between themselves, France, Greece and Russia. Prague becomes a key city for trade and diplomatic relations between the four states, though technically owned by the Germans .

1040AD/560 The enlightenment begins in Europe with a massive economic boom led by competition between the Russian and French empires. Russia's economy grows thanks to the exploitation of slaves in central Asia while France and Greece are able to develop thanks to access to knowledge from Alexandria.

1080AD/600 France was rich in wood but needed German metal and gold, Germania needed French technology but was afraid to break its tradition of neutrality. Britannia's vast fleet provides a kind of middleman for trade between Germania and France. The French learn the maritime arts from British sailors, expanding their own fleet in the Mediterranean.

1110AD/630 Steam engines finally become powerful enough to propel vehicles, replacing the horse and carriage. Through trade, the steam engine becomes the standard transport for the wealthy in advanced nations.

1150AD/670 Britannians experiment with oil as an alternative energy source to steam, creating new and more powerful engines. Britannia sells its engines to the other European powers but steadily raises its tarrifs for German trade, exploiting Germany's diplomatic needs.

1165AD/685 Britannian trade tarrifs cause a break down in trade with Germania, eventually leading to a German incursion into northern England. The war leads to a new Britannian invention: propeller driven flying machines armed with new automatic weapons from Russia. The Germans are repelled from Britannia on two occasions before the Germans sue for peace.

1166AD/686 Germania utilizes its position in Prague to negotiate the economic isolation of Britannia. The process takes years, long enough for the French and the Greeks to attain flying machine of their own, before agreeing to cease trade with Britain. Russia continues trade with Britannia but agrees to raise its own tariffs.

1178AD/698 France slowly replaces the withering Britannian fleet in the North Sea, Now dominating the Seas all along the Empire's coastline. Britannia becomes increasingly close to Russia, its only trade partner, but finds its economy suffering under limited trade and high tariffs. Britannia begins to fall behind the other European powers.

1180AD/700 Industrial age begins in Europe as oil powered engines become available to the middle class. Russia uses its Asian slaves to build the first public transport network in the Russian homeland. France sends expeditions to the Caribbean, coming into contact with the Aztec Empire, which has just reached the gunpowder age through trade with the Japanese.

1230AD/750 France invades and conquers the Aztec Empire thanks to its more advanced weaponry and oil propelled ships. Greeks use oil to power antilog computers, a science which had long been regarded a dead end. The Greeks master electricity during their pursuit of more sophisticated computing power.

1250AD/770 Germany invents a new use for oil, the jet engine. France crosses the Pacific Ocean and encounters the Japanese Islands. The Japanese are industrialised but paranoid about the large French fleet being so close to their homeland, war soon follows. Over the next ten years French air power defeats the Japanese, creating a new colony.

1255AD/775 The Russian Empire invades the Nubian caliphate. The Nubian were industrialised but not as much as the Russians. Cheap Asian labour allows the Russians to overwhelm the Caliphate with numbers. The Russian Empire now reaches to Egypt, adding the pyramids to its extensive collection of architectural and cultural wonders.

1260AD/780 Russian public works are now the envy of the world, Asian and Arab slaves allow for incredible prosperity and decadence amongst native Russians. Germania, with Greek oversight, begins constructing the Pan European Electronic Communications (PEEC) network.

1280AD/800 The information age begins with the completion of the network. Greek computers now sport black and white screens allowing for the first form of television. Russia benefits from the new network as French and Greek citizens are able to see the prosperity of Russian citizens and the beauty of Russian cities and buildings.

1285AD/805 Russia opens its borders to immigration, causing a slow brain drain in France as talented scholars seek better prospects as citizens in Russia. Greece proves immune to Russian seduction, most of its citizens prize democracy over higher personal wealth, French citizens simply trade one emperor for another.

1290AD/810 In an attempt to stem the flow of emigrants, France begins construction of a clean energy power plant and the construction of a jet engine strong enough to exit the earth’s atmosphere. French propaganda portrays France as an empire for the future and Russia as an empire of the past.

1300AD/820 The power plant is turned on and the space shuttle takes off. The French economy booms with the cheap energy and Greece begins designing a satellite which can take images of earth and send them back to earth. Their national pride restored, French citizens begin returning to their homeland.

1301AD/821 Russia attacks France in central Europe to help restore national pride as well as potentially capture the power plant and space command centre. Legions of Russian infantry and armour drive a wedge between Greece and France, ignoring the German defensive lines.

1302AD/822 Russian forces in central Europe grind to a halt. France invades northern Britannia and spreads south. Britannia had remained 40 years behind the rest of Europe, British semi-automatic rifles against French assault rifles. Cambridge is sacked before the British can rally.

1303/823 France diverts resources to the mainland, augmented by Russian defectors, forcing the Russians back until the Greeks and French forces reunite in Vienna. Britannia seizes the opportunity, pushing further north, inciting a French counter attack. The French storm all the way to the outskirts of London. Greece pushes through Bulgaria, reaching the Black Sea.

1304/824 Germania sees the Britannians are being betrayed by Russia and intervenes. German forces make landfall in Britannia east of Manchester, destroying French momentum. Contradictorily The German Air force begins air strikes behind Russian lines.

1305/825 Germany begins the year introducing an international governmental organisation to bring an end to the war. Half way through the year, Greece mounts a massive amphibious assault on Russia from across the black sea with the assistance of French ships. The presence of huge numbers of Greek infantry in a major Russian city behind the lines is sufficient to demoralise the Russian people and force concessions from the Russians to the French in the construction of the European Union.

1306/826 Flora Sauzier begins her reign as Empress of the dominant empire on earth and leader of the European Union. France controls space as well as a new renewable energy source. Flora begins the conquest of space, building space stations and moving heavy industry off planet. Meanwhile, computers become more and more powerful with the possibility of sentient computers in the near future. Satellites in space give France its first view of the entire planet, its 450 million people, most of whom live in barbarism. Germany leads expeditions into Africa, Asia and the America’s on behalf of the European Union.
