As they bid one another farewell, the station busily bustling all around them, they said their goodbyes. They’d done it so many times that it was business as usual, but it was hard for Marta being a Swedish immigrant, mother of two. Jerrold kissed the toddling twins, Alice and Timmy as his mother carried them into her home until Marta retrieved them.

She reminded him that she’d packed his favorite sandwich for the long train ride to Knoxville from Boston that Sunday evening. He often complained that train food was dry, stale and often overpriced.

Marta chose to go home and clean for a while before gathering her little ones. Something seemed to be bothering Jerrold while he packed his suitcase, seeming flustered for no reason at all. She tried to help him, but he shooed her into the kitchen, asking her to get him a cup of coffee.

Tiny socks, toys, storybooks, and half-empty bottles were scooped up in short order and returned to their respective homes. Marta liked an orderly house and promptly moved on to do the dishes. She jumped, engrossed in thought, as she wiped the last plate clean upon hearing the shrill evening whistle. Marta couldn’t figure Jerrold out, wondering if he was coming down with a cold.

Moving to their small, well-organized bedroom, Marta added an extra blanket to the bed fearing a cold-snap. As she hung up Jerrold’s gray wool trousers, she noticed a rose colored slip of paper. Assuming the paper was a receipt, Marta threw it in the trash basket next to her bed but noticed something strange on the corner of this folded sheet.

She slowly unfurled the edges and was immediately assaulted by an overwhelming spicy scent. It burned her nose. “Who scents receipts?” Sbe wondered. As she opened the paper, her hands stopped working as they began to shake. Marta dropped the paper to the floor and fell into overwhelming waves of sobs as reality washed over her, breaking her into pieces.
