COLOR “Challenged”
*********************************************

It is a wonder that my sister, brother and I escaped the strange and bizarre decorating genes that both of my parents seemed to cursed with. No matter how unusual the combination of colors, they were in total agreement on just how nifty the results were.

What makes their affliction even more surprising is that the family is rather deep in artistic talent. My father was quite good at sketching and drawing. His handwriting was a thing of beauty…grocery lists fit for framing. As long as it was black on white he couldn’t go wrong. My Mom’s family included haute couture designers. The line stopped with her though and skipped to myself and my siblings. We all have good color sense and are artistic. Maybe it would have been less of a trauma to our senses if we had shared their aberrations but alas we suffered through years of paints, wallpapers and fabrics that assaulted us at every turn.

As adults we schemed and plotted to do something, anything, about the kitchen. The walls were tiled half way up in a bright pink edged in black. The walls above were painted bright yellow. The curtains were white and orange. The dining set was black and RED!!The floor tan and brown.Throw rugs a bright green…of course. It was a true wonder that they actually agreed on this scheme .

One year while they were away visiting relatives in Florida we almost brought ourselves to the point of stealing the kitchen set and repainting the walls and blaming it on misguided but color sensible burglars. We lost our nerve when our spouses pointed out that Mom and Dad managed to live happily together for longer than most people’s lifespans ..so who were we to mess with success?

We bowed to that superior wisdom and blessed the fates that the color quirky genes skipped our generation.
