PREY

Waters roil with struggling

For breath

For life

She is small and weak

Compared to the young lions

That have her in their grip

Subduing her

She sees the sun shining

Through the muddy water

As she strains to reach

The surface and

Escape

Lungs burning

She has a moment of

Remembrance

When alone, vulnerable

She waded innocently

Into the lake at dawn

She heard them pounding

Towards her

In an instant

As her eyes meet theirs

She understands

Why they have come

Now, all she craves is

An end to the terror

The pain

A wish only granted

By death

In death she will be the victor

And escape her would be rapists

But the price she pays is

Despair

The unforgivable sin

In the eyes of

God
