THE APPLE ORCHARD

They stand in unnatural rows

Like prisoners at roll call

Limbs close to the ground

Those that reached for the sky

Lopped off in the spring

Sprayed with poison

So that not even the insects

Would keep them company

Or want their fruit

Over the hillside

In the wild forest

Crab Apple trees

Are hosting a party

For squirrels, birds

And deer

Their branches wave high

In the sky beckoning

The guests

The party favors of

Sour fruit

Carried far and wide

Insure the future

Of the wild trees

Safe from the greedy maw

Of man
