THE RACE

Winter begins to

Awaken from his long nap

Snuggling under his blanket of snow

For a few extra winks

Waiting for Gaudy Autumn

In her leafy robe of many colors

To undress and depart

For awhile they will run side by side

Like relay racers

Autumn handing off  the baton

To Winter as he overtakes

Indian summer

Sledding into the New Year

Hitting his snow shoe stride

Skating past ice bound rivers

Into the home stretch of

The late winter blizzard

Reaching out to pass the

Icy baton to Spring
