I believe that free down loads will increase CD sales, audience, and a marketing for all artist willing to embrace technology. I think back to when I first herd music I liked, and how was I introduced to that music? My friend would invite me to a concert or we listen to music while driven, or he would through a burned CD my direction. Of course the CD would be full of freely downloaded music, music I’ve never heard. What a cheap way to find music. Now I know I like this music, I’m not a afraid to go to a concert or buy more CD’s.

Most people that do free down loads are dedicated music buyers, quick to reach for their wallets. These free down loaders aren’t thieves or pirates but music lovers willing to pay for music. Sure there some one out there with 5GB of music on there computer and don’t own a CD, but I think those aren’t a common as the consumers who get a couple tracks, then buy the CD. Certain bands say, “that’s like steeling music,” and it hurt CD sales and it takes money out entertainers pocket. When CD sales dropped in the late nineties, the music industry said that free music trading was at fault, and proceeded to band it. CD sales are still dropping even after the banding of free trade on the net.

Free down loads have increased musician followings, and the more people get to hear the artists music the more people will go out just to buy their favorite CD. During my time as a down loader I discovered many bands that I wouldn’t have discovered any other way. This led me to go out to buy those CD’s, and just not one of their CD but all of their CD’s. In other word once I discover a band I like, I’m not happy until I have all their CD’s, videos, T-shirts and other great merchandise. I believe that the money they loose from downloads/copies is miniscule to the money they make by letting people listen and decide if they like an artist. So even though a few people will download and not buy the album, they’re the same people that will borrow a CD from a friend, and tape/rip the .

One good thing about all this free down loading is that artist realized the potential for a new market, a market free from the Middleman. I think it’s time to put more money into the artist hands, and out of the hands of the Music Industries. Its all possible with the use of free downloads off the artist own site, where anyone can hear the latest song to inspire the consumers to buy/order the CD/merchandise. By cutting out the Middleman or Music Industry it will increase the artist profit, and ease the cost of listening.

The artists that embrace this new way of marketing them selves will find a lot more profit in given away free music, think of it as a business card that sings. In fact most artist can take an example from the top grossing band, and fallow their lead. I'd like to see a download system that bypasses the producers, and goes directly to the artists. The Artists are starting to distance themselves from the Middleman, and I hope the trend continues.
