I am looking forward to going to college to study and explore new things; however, there are certain infallible lessons that you don’t learn in school.  One of which is how to maximize my savings using little slips of paper – coupons. My mother taught me at a young age the value of using coupons while shopping. Couponing went from being a necessity after her divorce from my father while she herself was in college, to a strategic battle where she was the winner every time.  I am happy to say she handed me her playbook and it will be put to good use when I go to college.

I think the most important thing she taught me is to know what coupons you have available. It is the worst feeling to see an expired coupon that could have been used for something you bought. Some sites like hip2save post the list of the coupon inserts and the corresponding savings. This can then be put in a Microsoft Word or Excel document to create a database that can be easily searched for those golden nuggets of savings.

Another strategy my mother taught me is to preplan your shopping trip. This would include a walkthrough to see if there are any unadvertised deals at the store or clearance items left for the picking. Armed with my phone I can take a picture to check my coupon database when I get back to the home. In case there is a deal that is on my radar I could use one of the available coupons from my emergency stash. The emergency stash is a small carrying organizer that fits in your purse where coupons are cut and put for those items you need and shouldn’t leave the store without getting because it is such a great deal. You learn early on that good deals don’t last long and the prepared couponer gets the deal. The other coupons are left in the inserts and placed in a file organizer by date and name of insert that correlates to the electronic database.

I will admit I have it much easier than my mom when she started due to social media and coupon saving bloggers and websites. This is definitely a useful tool in the war against overspending. This is more of a time saving strategy. One of my favorite sites is @sophiecoupons on Instagram; she itemizes the store, item, location of the coupon and the cost after the coupon. This allows you to virtually pre-plan your grocery shopping trip. She also identifies deals from other sites which saves time. Couponing takes a lot of time and I want to make sure I have a balance with my studies. Another one of my favorite sites for online savings is Coupon Sherpa. It is a couponers buffet of savings ranging from deals for online shopping to printable coupons for that trip to the mall with my roommates. Coupon Sherpa is also a mobile app for those times it is an impromptu trip or lunch date.

Although I am writing this essay to be eligible to receive a college scholarship from Dealspotr (https://dealspotr.com/scholarship-giveaway), couponing is also something I enjoy doing; it really becomes a way of life. I intend to turn my passion into a mission. I want to assist my peers like I have seen my mom assist others. I am sure I am going to come across students that were in the similar situations that my mother was in and by couponing I will be able to educate them about the wonderful world of shopping at a fraction of the cost.
