She was already in the first aid room when I came around the corner into the back lounge. She was sitting on the bed and looked pale and cold as she held her arm tightly with an already blood soaked cloth. As she looked up and saw me I could see she was hiding embarrassment. "I'm sorry." She stammered. " I didn't want to make this into a big deal, I thought I could take care of it myself." I dropped to me knees beside her and put pressure on her wound. As my hand grazed her arm I felt how clammy she was. "Lay down. It's okay." I reassured her as I helped her position herself onto the small bed. Her breathing was shallow and I was starting to fear for the worst.

I gently guided her downwards while I cupped the back of her neck in my arm, so she wouldn't have to strain to support herself. She was becoming less alert and I knew she was in danger of going into shock if she lost conciousness so I tried my best to keep her with me. I spoke to her and rubbed hershoulders, all the while trying to work on her wound. I kept a gentle, but firm grip around the cloth on her wrist and helped her to elevate her arm. "Aaron", she sounded breathless and distance, "Please.." She trailed off, her eyes searching mine. "Nikkie! Nikkie, come on, stay with me!" I could feel the panic rising in my voice. Her eyes fluttered as she fought to stay concious. Her breathing became more shallow and I felt for her pulse, it was rapid but very faint. I tightened a second cloth tightly around her wrist and rested her arm on top of a makeshift pillow and blanket stack so it would still be raised. "Nikkie. Can you hear me?" I asked as I held her head in my hands. Her reply was something between a mumble and a whimper as her eyes closed and I felt her go limp in my arms. "Nikkie..? Nikkie?!" She didn't respond. Her breathing had ceased and her heartbeat wasn't strong enough. I lifted her tiny frame in my arms as I moved her onto the floor. Her head lolled to the side as I put her down. I lifted her chin, breathed into her and watched her chest rise as it filled with air. I gave another breath and started compressions. The heel of my hand placed directly between her breasts as I pushed into her. "One, Two, Three..." I counted aloud as her body lay still beneath my palms. After a few rounds of compressions and breaths with no response I knew I would have to shock her. I had been briefly trained with the AED once but I wasn't sure I could use it on anybody, even if it was to savetheir life. I nervously pulled out the case and opened it. I followed it's prompts, removed Nikkie's shirt and bra, and placed one pad on her right collarbone and one just under her left breast. It immediately began analyzing her condition andadvised me to shock her. I took a breath and pressed the button, I watched as her limp body pulsed from the shock but the machine still hadn't found a rhythm. I administered another five cycles of CPR and gave another shock. Her muscles contracted as the wave of electricity ran through her torso but there was no change. Five more cycles of compressions and breaths. The machine reassessed her and prompted another shock, I pressed and watched as she convulsed one final time from the shock and as she lay still, I saw her chest rise. The machine brought back a rhythm. I rolled her into the recovery postion and laid beside her, stroking her, comforting her and keeping her warm until she was strong enough to wake up.
