Election 2013

Death of a Salesman: Ascendency of a Failed Monk

Tony Abbott and Willie Loman share amazing attributes: optimism and precognition. Willie always taught his sons about progress and how things would always get better, just as Abbott claims things will be so much better under him. And as Howard wrongly predicted interest rates would always be lower under the Coalition. False prophets all.

In 1975, Fraser and Howard effectively claimed power by claiming to have superior accounting skills, but they reigned over a period known as stagflation, a delightful sounding economic malady combining stagnant growth with high inflation, during a significant world recession that occurred after the Oil Shock of the early 70s. Individual nations are not capable of swimming against the tide of the world economy, especially when it’s going down the gurgler.

As I understand, the world economy is still suffering from the GFC, which seems a whole lot worse than the crash back in 1987; I don’t recall European nations going bankrupt and requiring bailouts back then, but then Capitalism is much like farming. You have productive seasons and drought seasons depending on rainfall, and you have economic booms and busts depending upon the irrationality of the human mind. The reason these economic crises occur is through the mistaken belief that share prices or real estate will continue to climb indefinitely, which inevitably leads to over-speculation and the inevitable crash: it’s not rocket science. It’s not even science, just irrational human behaviour. That is the cyclical pattern of economics that has occurred since the South Sea Bubble, but apparently under Abbott, this will somehow be avoided. Or so he predicts.

And as for waste, Mr. Abbott, I imagine the cost of Australian involvement in the Iraq war is substantially greater than the Pink Batts fiasco. Not to mention wars in Afghanistan and Vietnam that the Coalition has been lured into by our powerful cousins over the ocean.

I predict that the next six years under Abbott and Hockey will be a lot worse than under Fraser: at least he had a humanitarian refugee policy. I’m booking a one way ticket across the Tasman, where at least there is less possibility of being exposed to the sight of a middle-aged misogynist in red speedoes.
