The promises we make to ourselves are as empty as those we make to others.

Resolutions

It’s New Year’s Day

And I failed or forgot to make

Any resolutions last night

Or perhaps none occurred to me then

But it’s never too late

To turn over a new leaf

So to speak

But I’m not about to give up

Smoking and drinking

Which I have been quite happily

Doing for most of today.

Perhaps embark

On a new career path

Or clean the house

Or sweep the path.

Be kinder to the people

Who treat me with contempt

Find a better house to live

Start paying tax and rent.

Join a club or society

That will have me as a member

Get out more and make new friends

Whose names I can remember.

Eat healthier and more regularly

Stop drinking so much wine

Stop watching so much television

And wasting precious time

Start work on a novel

That no-one wants to read

Or helping the environment

And try to wipe out greed.

But now this list is so long

That it’s beyond both scope and vision

Maybe I’ll just try to stop

Falling in love with madding women.
