Chapter 1
SPLAT! My eyes flared open at the drop of water. Lurching up the water traced a cold tear down my cheek. Crossing to the opposite bed my feet quietly thudded against the solid wood floor. Scrambling onto the bed I tugged gently at my brother who seemed impossible to rouse. Hearing the woman turned restlessly in her cot a mere 5 paces away; I froze. My blood pumped loudly around my body echoing through my body. Endless minutes pasted in the uncomfortable position I was stuck in yet I still made no attempt to move. Finally the nanny settled down and the rhythmic breathing assured me that she was once again fast asleep. Having no patience for my brother’s deep sleep I violently shook him. He grabbed my wrist and his eyes locked on mine. Recognition flashed in his eyes and he suddenly let go making me rock back. Pulling my wrist away from him I rubbed it in irritation.
We scrambled across the distance between us and the open door. Stepping out of the stuffy prison we were entrapped in a welcoming cool breeze blessed our escape into the midnight world. Sabine’s rough hand yanked me back from the open ground behind the deep brown beam. The sentries stumbled across laughing and jeering occasionally tripping on the odd jutting rock. Thankfully I gazed up at my brother’s hazel brown eyes finding him examining the land. Seeing the coast was clear he once again wrenched me to a run. The silken grass sped underneath me as we ran in fright and excitement. Crashing into the Dungeon’s wall I panted down to the mud my breath forming mini clouds. ‘Let’s go!’ Sabine whispered harshly in my ear. Once again I could feel the tangible anticipation race through my body.
Edging towards the Dungeon’s entrance we peered round the corner. No one was there! Surely someone must keep watch but before I could ponder upon the reason Sabine had sprinted inside behind the standing barrels. Following his lead I once again beside his comforting warmth.
Before I could question why we were here an ancient man entered the room feet shuffling. Murmuring unintelligible words under his breath the wooden wall shimmered revealing yet another chamber. Staring in wonderment I looked upon the first and last dragon I had ever seen. Its deep red scales seemed to burn brightly with divine light and his body rose up threatening to breach the high walls. The glimmering silver chain clamped down on his neck and blue snakes ran up chain into him. His body trembled with shock and pain falling down to the floor with a massive thump. The wrinkled man laughed and shivers travelled down my body in series. My gaze wavered to the dragon’s eyes. Pain peaked in my body. I screamed in horror. He smiled dreadfully. Everything went black.
