Where was I? How had I gotten there? Neither of these questions attained answers as I fled through the forest. It was as if I had been asleep, and then suddenly, I had awakened to the frightful sight of the dark abysmal wood. Fear gripped every organ in my body, threatening to stop me in my tracks. Fighting my terror was my ingrained instinct to flee. But from what?
I made an effortless attempt to stand, only to be painfully denied by a damn twisted ankle. Cringing, I pulled myself to the dark shadows, tucking myself into a ball of complete terror. Shivering and shaking, I huddled there, silently praying to a presence I no longer believe in.
“Here kitty, kitty, kitty.” A rough voice enticed.
The world halted. The wind silenced. The trees hushed their groaning branches. I cupped my trembling hand over my mouth to muffle my harsh breathing. A twig snapped somewhere in front of me. Only a few feet in front of me. Only a few feet...
“Come out, kitty. I just want to play. I know you like to play.” The wicked voice said, coming closer and closer.
Before I could scream out, an enormous shadow loomed before me, encased in the evil darkness that flooded these woods. The moon peeked out from behind the clouds as the hideous shadow smiled and raised an ax high above its head. I saw only the glint of the ax as he brought it down. And then the moon hastily dipped back below it’s innocent veil.
I remember everything about that night, and yet, I remember nothing of importance. These woods are my home now. They protect and love me. The howling winds voice my rage and hatred. The sharp branches act as gates to deny entrance to my cursed home, except to those that desperately need its protection.
And I? I prowl through these trees, searching with a hunger that shall never be satisfied, for a creature that hunted and murdered. My name is revenge. And I forever dwell in the shadows of this world.
