"I am only getting in this car on one condition," I joked, leaning against my car.
"Wait. There are conditions on this date? I never agreed to that," he laughed from the driver's seat of his own shiny Challenger. "Besides, you can't say no to this car."
My eyes ran along the sleek neon green car. It was beautiful. My dream car in my favorite color and I had a date with the very sexy driver. For a moment, it seemed that all of my bad luck was going to turn around. Unlucky girls did not get a date like this, with a guy like him, in a car like that. I smiled.
Taking one last hit from my cigarrette, I contemplated whether this was a good idea. I had no idea who this guy was. I mean, I had met him once before. He was my grandfather's third wife's daughter's friend and I had been introduced to him at my Grandfather's labor day picnic. We had chit-chatted about cars and other meaningless things, but we had not really spent an extended amount of time together. He had found me on facebook, which is how I discovered his name: Ryan. We exchanged numbers and texted rarely.
I had been dating Matt when I first met Ryan, so I was less than interested. Right after Matt and I had our messy break up, Ryan had started texting me more often. I was too emotionally damaged to even think about anyone else. Then, I started to date again, casually. Ryan kept texting me and finally I gave in to one of his requests for a date. It seemed like good timing.
Good timing, hah! Matt had started talking to me again, bringing back that hellish mixture of wonderful memories and hauntingly tortuous moments of abuse. I was in the process of being laid off, after my employer had decided to keep holiday help left over from the hectic christmas season, and let the other long term workers go. I was jobless, loveless, with unpaid bills, a shattered heart, and a stress level that was about to break me in half. Perfect time for a date, huh?
I had started to have second thoughts as soon as he pulled up in his car. He was right. How could I say no to that car? How could I say no to him. He was one of the good old fashioned rednecks that were so common in this area, with a passion for fast cars, faster bikes, and anything to do with the great outdoors. Gorgeous and rough, I could not help but be intensely attracted to him. I like those types.
"So what is the condition?" Ryan asked, disturbing my moment of admiration for his machine.
"You do not, under any circumstances, try to kiss me," I sternly ordered, not a hint of sarcasm in my voice, "or try to tell me you love me." That last part was not included in my original deal, but I remembered what every other date had been like. I was so sick of guys announcing their love for me after the first date. It was the same thing over and over again. A kiss, maybe sex, then "I will wait for you forever" , "You are the one for me". or "I am so in love with you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.". I was so done with that shit.
Ryan laughed. "Deal."
I smiled, threw my cigarrette on the ground, and got in his car. Now for the second test. I did not care for men who asked me on a date, picked me up, and then had no clue where we were going. Word of advice, if a man is going to ask a girl out, then he better have the date all planned out. That is not the girl's job. The girl is just supposed to get pretty, show up, and enjoy.
"I thought we would go for a drive in the country. I know you said you got a new camera for christmas. You can take pictures, and I can enjoy the drive," Ryan announced as he pulled out of his parking spot.
"Excellent. And lucky for you, I have my camera," I smiled. That was good. Not only did he have a plan, but he actually had paid attention to something I had said almost a month ago. This was starting to look like it may end up being a decent date.
