The Rain...

devouring my clothes

coating my cheeks

as I walk...slowly

in no rush for refuge

nor home.

My taught steps, paced

Ignoring the stares,

Ignoring the laughter

of those shielded

behind bus stop shelters

after school.

For what do they know,

their sprung from civil homes

with clean walls and bathrooms.

They eat together

at the same kitchen table,

and say goodnight to each other

and share gifts at Christmas.

...and they always laugh,

oh they laugh so hard

it could make you sick.

It's laughter built on security,

money, acceptance, confidence,

and that other thing...

friendships.

Well I've got friends of my own,

ones I look for and love,

the cool cleansing kind

that clatter on streets

raising dusty aromas

while taking my cares

down sewer grates

where they belong.

Oh yeah, I love raindrops alright,

they keep people separated.

And they never mock,

and they never tease.

...But most of all

they hide secrets,

that slide down cheeks,

and believe me...

they hide mine well.
