King Arthur is one of the most popular figures in mythology, but did he exist? And why do some modern scholars even doubt that King Arthur is a real historical figure?

Today I am going unravel this great Mystery. The first time we hear about Arthur is in a book called History of the Kings of Britain, 1135 by a Welsh bishop named Geoffrey of Monmouth. In the first chapter he explains that Britain is named after a warrior Brutus, who sailed from Troy in another chapter he explains that a King named Vortigern who is a real person ordered an impregnable tower to be built on Mount Snowdon in Wales. The tower kept collapsing and the king’s soothsayers told him that if he wanted the tower to remain standing he would have to sprinkle the stones with the blood of a boy who had no father. Which is a bit dark. The king’s messengers traveled throughout the land until they found a boy with on father. The boy’s name Merlin.

Vortigern explained to Merlins mother that he has to be sacrificed and his blood sprinkles on the foundations of the tower to which Merlin should no fear and offered to prove that the soothsayers where lairs and asked to have them brought before him. “Do you know why the tower keeps collapsing?” Merlin asked the soothsayers in which they shook their heads. “because there is a pool of water underneath it which makes the earth soggy”. Vortigerns men were then ordered to dig and did find a pool of water. Merlin then went on to foretell that if thy drained the water they would find two dragons. And this proved to be true. Vortigern spared the life of Merlin.

Merlin later went on to make a series of prophecies including that Vortigern would be burned to death in a tower. Merlin foretold this and when a king named Aurelius Ambrosius invaded Britain, he is the rightful hier to the throne, set fire to Vortigerns tower. When Aurelius was poisoned his brother, Uther Pendragon became king and after conquering Scotland he invited all the nobles of his realm for a feast to witness his coronation. Among all where the Duke Gorlois of Cornwall and his wife, Igerna. Uther fell in love with Igerna and when the Gorlois realized this he left for Cornwall.

This greatly insulted the King, who pursued Gorlois with an army. Gorlois hid his wife in the castle of Tintagel which was virtually impregnable. When the King learned about this he fell into a deep depression. The problem was solved by Merlin who used his magic to transform Uther into the Duke Gorlois double. Uther went to the castle of Tintagel and entered with any problems. That night in Igernas arms, he conceived a baby boy who would become King Arthur.

While Uther was away his men attacked the castle in which Gorlois had taken refuge and killed him. Uther married Igerna and made her queen. He reigned for another fifteen years until he was poisoned and then Arthur became king.

The sword in the stone and the Knights of the round table plays a large part of this legend. If Arthur was a teenager when his father died, why should he have had to prove his right to the throne by pulling a sword out of a stone?

Merlin takes charge of Arthur from the moment he is born, Merlin then hands the baby over to a Knight named Sir Ector.

The battle of Badon which is Arthurs most famous battle.
